About this ebook
This free short story prequel by bestselling author Mary Ellis provides an early glimpse into the life of Quaker Emily Harrison. Laced with humor and a sweet love story, this bonus material also contains the first chapter of Emily's continuing journey in The Quaker and the Rebel, Book 1 of the Civil War Heroines series.
Summer 1861—Emily Harrison is finding life a bit overwhelming. Alone on her family's farm, she must take on the roles of both housekeeper and farmer. She cares for the garden, makes plans for planting the fields, and milks the cows, all the while creating havoc in the home her mother used to keep immaculate. That is in addition to providing a safe house as part of the Underground Railroad. In the midst of this whirlpool of swirling tasks, she is getting ready to greet very important dinner guests—the love of her life and her pastor and his wife. Will Matthew finally propose? What news does Reverend Ames bring that turns Emily's world upside down? How does the new war between the North and South impact her life? And...will the goose be cooked in time?

JUNE 1861
Oh, blast it! I’ve murdered another one.
Emily Harrison glanced around to be certain her oath went unheard and then smiled at her foolishness. The house’s chronic emptiness was the cause of her jangled nerves. From her bedroom window, she could see the plump goose roasting on a spit over the fire. Unfortunately, the large bird was fully engulfed in flames.
Abandoning her attempt to sweep the hair off her damp neck, Emily dropped her hairbrush and ran down the stairs into the yard. When was the last time I turned the crank? Silently chastising herself, she wrapped a towel around the handle—the kitchen towel that spent its life draped over her shoulder—and rotated the bird away from the heat. Yet despite her heroic endeavors, the goose continued to flame out of control.
Tarnation!
Emily stomped to the well twenty paces away and retrieved the bucket of water drawn in anticipation of this particular likelihood. There you go, you nasty bird,
she crowed and extinguished not only the goose but the fire as well. Emily stared at the drenched, smoking coals. At least I’m certain you’re done.
She poked her long-handled fork into the charred gift from an admirer—a gift she had assured the gentleman would be prepared into a delectable feast.
Pushing her hair off her forehead with a sooty palm, Emily left the main course to cool and marched toward the kitchen, but before she reached the worn porch steps, a familiar smell assailed her senses. My biscuits! This cannot be happening!
But smoke wafting from her mother’s woodstove oven assured her that indeed it was.
