About this ebook

Can best friends become forever lovers?

Under the guise of research for a magazine article, Brett Carver contacts 1Night Stand, but she’s really hoping a hot date will be the perfect quick-fix to her problem: constantly fantasizing about her best friend, Lincoln Murrow.

After accidentally coming across Brett's email from Madame Eve, Lincoln cannot stand the thought of another man laying hands on the woman he's craved for years. The solution is simple: take the place of her date. He’ll show her what is familiar is not always predictable.

When she walks in and sees Lincoln waiting for her, she’s shocked, mad as hell, then torn between potent desire and keeping their relationship platonic. Unable to resist her fantasy-come-true, she gives in, knowing it’s a point of no return.

They were always meant to be together, and Linc knows it’ll take more than amazing sex to convince Brett. Lucky for her, he’s more than up to the challenge. Because sometimes the biggest risk is not taking one at all.

    Chapter One

Brett didn’t realize her best friend had been calling her name until he appeared in the entry of her den, too distracted by the exciting news to answer him.

Hey, you listening? Lincoln asked, filling her doorway with his broad shoulders.

Sorry. Checking my email. What’s up? She swiveled in her chair.

His plaid blue-and-white button-up stretched across his chest and tapered along his torso as though custom-made. On any other man, it might have been boring shirt. On Lincoln, it emphasized his masculinity and cut physique. The color highlighted his sexy bedroom eyes, and since he’d left the first two buttons open, it showed off the strong column of his throat.

He pressed his palms on either side of the entry and leaned in. The guys finished the alarm installation and left. All you need to do is pick a four-digit code.

And all you need to do is stop turning me on, Linc.

Well, with the date of a lifetime she’d just scheduled with 1Night Stand, she’d fix that. Her one-night stand was scheduled to take place in a private, decadent villa. Madame Eve, the owner of the service, had promised the guy waiting for her would be everything Brett had described and more. Someone eager for a night of uninhibited sex, who would hold nothing back. After scribbling the details on a sticky note of when and where to be, she switched off her monitor. Okay. Go ahead and think of one for me.

Brett, that kind of defeats the purpose, he admonished, crossing his sculpted arms. "This is for your house, so you’re the one who has to do it. And no one should know your security code."

Not even my best friend whom I trust implicitly? She batted her lashes, folding the sticky note and tucking it in her bra.

His gaze darted to her chest then shot back to her eyes. Nice try. Now get your little butt over here and get it done.

All right, all right. She pushed off the chair and walked toward him. Would her date be tall and magnetic like him? Could he show off a pair of jeans and a shirt with cuffed sleeves as well as her childhood friend did?

God, but he did look fine today.

    Every day.

She pursed her lips, stopping in front of him. Sorry for being a brat. Thanks for doing this. On impulse, she hugged him, molding her body closer than she ever had before.

He hesitated then snaked his rock-hard arms around her. Hey. Don’t mention it.

Ah, his smell. She tried not to inhale too deeply and sighed. Difficult not to, the scent so familiar, comforting, a hint of the same old detergent he’d been using for years, the musky aftershave, and something innately Linc. All warm male heat around her, molding to her. They weren’t the hugging kind of pals, but she used any excuse nowadays to do it more often. She should pull away. Easier said than done.

Slipping out of his arms, she strove for a casual tone. I still think this over-the-top system is unnecessary. I’ve never felt unsafe here. Not to mention, it seems redundant after that apocalypse-survival bag you gave me last year.

Complete with pepper spray, a Taser, brass knuckles, a whistle, a battery charger, a first aid kit, and a heavy-duty flashlight. Those were the kind of presents she received from a guy friend who thought she could be too reckless to stay out of trouble. Sure, she had a bit of a free-spirited nature, but
