HUSBAND & WIFE
I like watching my wife with other men.
Usually, I’ll sit back and have a drink.
There she is now. Dancing. She catches my eye amidst the crowd. I nod. The ring on her finger prominent. 2.5 Karats, with a VVS1 for clarity. I picked it special. I wanted everyone to see. The man she’s dancing with notices it. I see his gaze wander down to her left hand, but only after he’s surveyed her hips, legs and breasts. He maneuvers her around the dance floor with an artistry and expertise that is rare in this day and age.
She enjoys it. She enjoys being controlled. So few men really know how to take charge. The modern man. I see them with my wife. They fumble, bumble, even crumble at the sight of her.
She is stunning. And I’m not just saying that because she’s my wife—because she belongs to me. It’s been proven. When we walk or rather stroll together, she gets the looks, the gazes, the stares—I can see them trying to find the relation. They search. The look of despair and disappointment come over their faces when they see the ring.
The guy she’s dancing with thinks he’s going to get lucky. And he might if I allow it. I see him whispering in her ear. She laughs. I see him gazing into her eyes. Flirting. She smirks. Perhaps I will let him...Perhaps. But only if it gives her pleasure. I give the okay, but it’s up to her to decide. Here they come now. Dripping in sweat. The guy looks confident as he walks up and shakes my hand. I don’t get up. He tries to hide the look of I wanna fuck your wife. I let him think that he’s fooled me.
She sits down next to me and whispers. I don’t tell him what she whispered, nor do I tell you. Some things are meant only for a husband and wife. She grabs her purse and heads to the bathroom. Her dance partner stands awkwardly. He smiles, befuddled, looks at the dance floor, then back to me.
I offer him a chair. He politely declines, but after several moments, takes me up on the offer. We engage in small talk. Talk, Talk, Talk. It drags on. I stop playing the fool and ask him outright. His eyes widen, his mouth drops. I remain steadfast. He denies. Denies, Denies, Denies. It’s comic. I even laugh out loud. To some degree it relaxes him. Puts him at ease. I tell him it’s okay.
I can see you, the reader, silently judging me, but you have not walked in my shoes, nor can you.
My wife has just reappeared. She mouths I love you. I take that as a cue to pay the bill. Just as the dancer bids us farewell, I invite him to come home with us. The wife looks at him, grinning. Without seeming overly anxious, he agrees.
I pull back my wheelchair from under the table and off we go.
JAZZ…
Waves crash against the sand. White sand. 7 miles of it. Sun was out, not a cloud in sight. I was in the ocean, my mother asleep in the cabana.
The water was warm. 84 degrees to be exact. I felt it on my newly grown beard. The beard my mother objected to. How do you expect to get a job looking like that? You’re black.
She was right. I was black. Jobs had been scarce. But they were scarce when I was clean-shaven.
Today, I let the thoughts pass, the disappointments, the self-doubt—I was a man in the ocean. A black man in the ocean; riding wave after wave with each white passerby stopping to see who I was. "Who is this crazy bearded man chasing wave after wave
