It Can't and Other Stories

The book derives its name from the title of one of the short stories that make up the anthology. In this anthology, three stories based on diverse backgrounds from an African rural setting, present the intrigues of growing up against emerging developments in social life and technology. Each story has a unique set of characters based on their age, from early childhood to late high school, to highlight their growing up experiences. In the first story the school boys are awed by the sight of electricity in the village and the storyline is based on an argument that illustrates the myths and misconceptions that were generally associated with such developments.
The second story is about a popular game that boys used to play using the plastic liners used to seal metal crowns covering soft drink bottles. In the absence of modern playing equipment, the characters resort to using available wastes of no value to develop a complex game with its own set of rules and procedures.
The last story combines humor with powerful gimmickry as the characters try to imitate a court session in order to solve a difficult puzzle on a lost item.

Douglas Evan

Douglas Evan was born in 1980 to rural peasant parents in Western Kenya. Growing up in a typical African rural setting provided him with exciting contrasts when he later moved to Nairobi to complete his basic education. This inspired him to start writing about his earlier experiences. Most of his fictional work is thus based on real life experiences from his childhood.
