    Lily’s Story

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the most esteemed high judge of the Wilkersonakin Provence said from behind his bench. The defendant in this case is about to take the stand and while she testifies, I would like you to keep a few things in mind. First, the defendant is on a heavy regimen of antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and other mind-altering drugs. These enable her to tell her story and not go crazy. Here is what she is like without these drugs.

The judge pushed a button on the remote next to his right hand. Before him and the jury, a life-size image of the defendant came into view.

A woman on the short side was banging her clenched fists on a white padded wall, yelling, Why doesn’t it work? over and over again.

After a few minutes of such behavior, the door to the cell opened and two muscular men in blue uniforms came into the room. Their presence drew the woman’s attention and she ran at the nearest man and began to beat her fists on his chest.

The woman began screaming, Help me! Her shrill and desperate tone sent shivers throughout the courtroom.

The man the woman wasn’t attacking came up next to his companion and pulled out a very long needle.

The woman saw the needle and began to struggle even more, trying everything within her power to get away from it. To get away from the men and the needle the man held.

But her efforts were in vain. The man who held her was too strong.

The man with the needle plunged it into her arm and within seconds all the fight within the woman began to dissipate. Her movements became sluggish, lacking coordination.

Finally, after what seemed like a lifetime had passed, the woman collapsed within the man’s arms, her head lolling back at an unnatural angle.

The last sight the jury saw of the woman were of the two men carrying her out of the room.

The judge cleared his throat to get their attention. "As you see, without her medication, she is very unstable, so what you will see in the courtroom will be more of an echo of what she used to be and not a true representation of her current state of mind.

"The second thing you must remember when listening to the defendant is that she is incapable of lying to you. This is a wonderful side effect of all the drugs she’s on. The events she describes may be distorted based on her mindset at the time they occurred, but the events she presents are as she sees them. Even if the events and the leaps in logic she makes don’t make sense to you or me, they do to her.

Lastly, I ask that nobody make any sudden moves or loud noises once she enters the courtroom. I have been advised by her doctors that any such movements or sounds have the ability to drag her back into her delusional and dangerous state of mind.

The men and women on the jury started murmuring to each other.
