    ACT ONE

(AT RISE: As the house lights dim, different groups of carolers enter from various points in the theater. Each group is singing a different uptempo carol, such as I Saw Three Ships, Good King Wenceslas, or We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The LAMPLIGHTER enters, watches as the carolers exit and, as he speaks, lights the first lamp.)

LAMPLIGHTER: Once upon a time, Marley was dead! There was no doubt about it! He was as dead as a doornail. Did Scrooge know he was dead? Oh, yes! This must be distinctly understood! Otherwise, nothing wonderful can come of the story we are about to relate.

(HE waves his hand and all the other lamps come on.)

LAMPLIGHTER: For Scrooge never painted out old Marley’s name. There it hung above the warehouse door: Scrooge and Marley.

(Light hits Scrooge and Marley sign above the counting house.)

LAMPLIGHTER: Now, some people called Scrooge Scrooge, and others called him Marley. But he answered to both names; it was all the same to him. And on this particular Christmas eve, in cold, bleak, biting weather --- Old Scrooge sat in his counting house.

(Lights rise on SCROOGE in the counting house. Behind him is CRATCHIT.)
