Her most famous book, What Katy Did, published under her pseudonym Susan Coolidge, was inspired by her own childhood growing up with four younger siblings. Part of the "What Katy Did" series, but one I don't think I've read before! The first third of the book is still mostly about Katy and her wedding, but the rest focuses on Clover and Phil staying out west while Phil recovers from an illness (and meeting her future husband). It's a pretty cute book, but not as interesting as the earlier ones in the series.

It's amazing how much of these old stories is still relevant. Katy bucks the trend toward expensive, exhausting weddings and gathers the whole family & circle of friends to make the cakes, then gets married at home in a simple gown put together with heirlooms including her dead mother's shawl. Clover turns out to be a richer character than Katy was at her age, but because everything is described with discretion, readers have to be discerning about what's left unsaid. Still, some of the things are said quite plainly, as for instance how not to have one's experiences ruined by a tag-along whiny old lady.

Following on from ‘What Katy Did Next’, this brings us Katy's wedding and Clover's own adventures as she takes the consumptive Philly out west (at least, as far as Colorado) for a cure. Like Clover herself, it's quiet, low-key, domestic, but comfortable. And Rose Red makes an appearance, which can never be a bad thing.
