Dangerous Highs is a novella, a paranormal fantasy bridging the gap between the past and present. What begins as a historical fantasy morphs into an urban fantasy, a contemporary fantasy set in the present.

As the story opens, a young girl named Alcestis, an orphan in all but name, is sold into slavery. Was she at the right place at the right time? Or had destiny decreed that her buyer, her new master, would be the foremost Healer of the time—and she would become his apprentice, a dangerous status that will elicit envy and enemies.

In time, she'll discover when you lose someone you love through an accident, you learn to live with the ramifications, but when you lose someone you love through a crime, you want revenge. The question then becomes what is the Ultimate Revenge, a question she won't be able to answer until the distant future when she meets Gloria.

This thought-provoking tale begins fifteen hundred years ago in ancient Constantinople. The first quarter of the book stays in the distant past, but during the last three quarters of the tale, the story shifts from Europe to the present, to the state of Florida.

Gloria was stretched out next to Juan in the back of the van, her hands, mouth and feet bound by duct tape. She heard her boss's labored breathing. Poor Juan, she thought, surprised she wasn't having difficulty breathing herself. Besides a throbbing headache, the left side of her face was swollen badly. She could hear Jerry talking on his cellphone with Robert. From the scraps of conversation she'd heard, she gathered that Robert was up ahead in Juan's car and that they were heading for one of the local waterway canals common to the Miami area.
