    II. READING PASSAGE

    FATHERS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

All children deserve to have a healthy, loving relationship with their parents who are actively involved in their lives. Children thrive when they know they are loved by both parents. Fathers are as important as mothers in raising healthy, happy and mature children.

One area that has been somewhat neglected in recent years is men's health and modeling healthy men's behavior. Such neglect has repercussions on family life and the future health of American children. For example, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States, killing more than 300,000 men each year. Yet there is much that people can do to help counteract this trend. Fathers in particular can make a real difference when it comes to setting a good example for their children.

Here are some things that fathers can do.

    * Be there for your children, both emotionally and physically. Arrange enjoyable family activities and outings. Children who have actively engaged fathers are more likely to have good physical and emotional health, to achieve academically, and to avoid drugs, violence, and delinquent behavior.

    * Exercise with your family. Families that exercise together not only stay together, but live longer. People tend to revert to the habits that they practiced as children. If they practice sports or exercise when they are young, they are more likely to remain active as adults.

    * Model healthy strategies. Children are remarkably resilient. They do not have to feel that life is perfect or that everything must go their way. However, they do need modeling and support with learning how to bounce back from disappointments and setbacks. Model for your children positive strategies to overcome problems and deal with sadness
