Conclusion
I. Introduction
Publius’ Postulates II, Executive Words offers the reader Publius’ thoughts about words which are bandied about in executive leadership discussions and also words that are avoided by the droning, boring, and redundant cloned leadership seminar leader. I do not advance that the qualities or attributes of any word discussed herein are mandatory for success. In fact, you, the reader, will need to be prepared to digest some very nontraditional definitions and commentary.
Publius’ books have been written because it is my experience that most, hell, nearly all, leadership education is directed at a general audience and is the equivalent of religious regurgitation. The typical professor, seminar leader, instructor, speaker, author, or bartender, addressing leadership, whether in a spoken or written presentation, offers material that is composed of the same checklist sleep aides.
How can otherwise intelligent people fail to realize and respond to the simple fact, and I mean fact, that leadership principals for the first line supervisor and the CEO are universes apart? I write for the CEO, senior executives, and those aspiring!
I know of many alleged leadership teaching gurus who make excellent incomes who are employed by organizational senior executives to present seminars, lectures, or programs. Many such events are costly retreats
and many others are billed as conferences or the ubiquitous summit.
Most leadership presenters would qualify as amateur anesthesiologists administering a generic leadership litany. I have had a Myers-Briggs leadership style examination administered dozens of times and been coached that once I know my leadership strengths and weaknesses I can be a more effective leader. Then, if still conscious, I have suffered an increased dosage of the list of leadership qualities; love, forgiveness, tolerance for failure, and equality of man being among them. And finally, if I’m somehow resisting being anesthetized, the leadership quack administers the list of methods of gaining support and compliance. I took notes and wrote the same points as a new junior leader decades previous! I also recognized as a junior leader that most of these points, methods and principals were dependent upon the situation and personnel, and often were contrived by residents of Disneyland.
Never is reality addressed. Never is there presented a possibility that one can be malicious or self-serving and still be an effective executive leader. Never discussed is the idea that every aspect of leadership has the potential for multiple definitions. Which regurgitating leadership guru discusses survival in the executive ranks so that one may continue to lead through and past adversity? None!
Onward we progress. One issue critics,
as I term the obsessed and nauseating single perspective reader, will object to a particular Publius word which trips the zealot button and then that reader will object to the entire work. One issue persons are, as examples, religious (whomever or whatever) dogma trumps all, censorship protects minds, make love not war, fact is unnecessary, and capitulation into slavery is preferable to death. These examples are no different than those who measure all things by a well known and debated position on a single topic; guns, abortion, race, church versus state, taxes, immigration, or entitlements. There are those that cannot get past their personal single unalterable life requirement no matter their agreement with and support of all else said or done. To those readers I dedicate Word #10. Wait, don’t look!
