About this ebook

Constance Holme was an English writer and playwright. She was born in Milnthorpe, Westmorland (now in Cumbria), the youngest of fourteen children. Her novels are set in the old county of Westmorland, where she lived most of her life. Many of Holme's works explore class relationships; her first two books focus on the three-way relationships between landowners, tenant farmers and land agents. Her novel The Splendid Fairing won the Prix Femina-Vie Heureuse.
Excerpt: ...never your son, Cousin Eliza?" he exclaimed, puzzled, rushing in where not only angels would have feared to tread, but where the opposite host also would have taken care to keep their distance. "It's very stupid of me, of course, but I've always made sure that Geordie-an'-Jim were twins." Eliza turned baleful eyes upon the eager, inquisitive face. Her mind, concentrated in sullen fury upon the enemy recently departed with banners, found a difficulty in focussing itself upon this insignificant shape.
