About this ebook

Philosophy in the Bedroom is an erotic book by the Marquis de Sade written in the form of a dramatic dialogue. Though initially considered a work of pornography, the book has come to be considered a socio-political drama. Set in a bedroom, the two lead characters make the argument that the only moral system that reinforces the recent political revolution is libertinism, and that if the people of France fail to adopt the libertine philosophy, France will be destined to return to a monarchic state. In the introduction, the Marquis de Sade exhorts his readers to indulge in the various activities in the play. He says that the work is dedicated to "voluptuaries of all ages, of every sex" and urges readers to emulate the characters. "Lewd women", he writes, "let the voluptuous Saint-Ange be your model; after her example, be heedless of all that contradicts pleasure's divine laws, by which all her life she was enchained."

Marquis de Sade

Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade, was a French aristocrat and writer who was notorious for his immoral lifestyle, and whose name provided the basis for the modern terms “sadism” and “sadist”. Among de Sade’s best known works are the erotic novels Justine, or Good Conduct Well Chastised, Juliette, or Vice Amply Rewarded, and The 120 Days of Sodom. Although an elected delegate to the National Convention during the French Revolution, de Sade was regularly incarcerated because of his lasciviousness, spending approximately 32 years in prison or in an insane asylum. He died in the asylum at Charenton in 1814. De Sade’s life is depicted in the 2000 film Quills starting Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet and Joaquin Phoenix.

This is the worse book ever. I had no idea what it was about, and imagine my surprise and horror! What the hell was Sade's problem? An Oedipus complex or what?! This book sucks so much I want to puke! Get a grip! it's the story of how three grown-ups rape an innocent girl in every possible way yuck!!!

I found this book to be a bit much. Portnoy's Complaint dealt with sexuality much more effectively than Philosophy In the Boudoir and I do realize that there is more to this book than plain sexuality and the plight of the libertine was very much engaged in freedom of sex I just found it to be too much.
