    Margaret raised her head from the pillow.

    She rubbed her eyes. It was still early. She had to get up for school. It was dark, as it was these days. She knew she had to get up, because before she left for school she had to feed Midnight, her malamute, and take her for a short walk.

    Midnight had loved their summer days together. They had spent nearly the entire day together in the woods. Midnight learned many new things. Now that school had started Margaret was gone for what seemed to Midnight almost forever.

    Margaret lifted herself from the warm covers. She slipped into her robe, stepped into her slippers, and rubbed her eyes again. She wandered into the kitchen, where she heard her mom preparing breakfast. The kitchen always had a cozy, warm feeling.

    Good morning, dear. Did you sleep well? asked Margaret’s mom.

    Yes, but I am still tired, answered Margaret. It gets harder each day to get out of bed when it is dark.

    It does take some getting used to. Have some cocoa and toast. Get yourself dressed, comb your hair and brush your teeth. When you have fed Midnight, and walked her down the street and back, I will have hot scrambled eggs and pancakes ready.

    Margaret drank her warm cocoa and ate toast with blueberry jam, made from the blueberries they had picked in Hatcher Pass earlier in the fall. She dressed, combed her hair, and brushed her teeth. She put on very warm clothes, including a hat, scarf, and mittens. In the early morning it was definitely chilly outside.

    Midnight knew Margaret was out of bed. With her keen sense of hearing, she heard Margaret’s voice. Midnight waited breathlessly for Margaret to arrive. She knew it meant breakfast for her and a morning walk with her best friend. She could hardly wait. Midnight never tired of seeing Margaret and going for
