    Sacrificial Lamb

    By

The room was once pink and covered with posters of the latest boy bands of the time. Stuffed unicorns and other various animals lovingly placed on the bed, empty chair, dresser, where ever a free spot could be had. A care free living space of a young girl that possessed all the hope and positivity of a protected childhood. Laughter, joy, and dance beats echoed through this room, where bright sunlight filled every corner through shear drapes. If the stuffed animals could see from their plastic eyes, if they could speak from their sewed mouths they'd talk about how they never seen a frown upon their owners face, never a tear from her eyes. But that was years ago and things change. That was before adolescence. That was before her mother became hopelessly sick. That was before her father had to take a second job, drain the bank accounts, and spend more time away from her to pay for her mother’s treatments.

Now the heavy drapes hardly ever open to the daylight. Pink has been drowned out by light gray walls with black trim. Colorful posters have been displaced with black and white art of bands such as Bauhaus, Nine Inch Nails, Morfiouz and Skinny Puppy. Dance beats have long faded, replaced by heavier, somber drones from the darker side of music. Sarah sits in front of her computer screen, the only source of light besides the sandalwood scented candles burning on her desk. Her long golden blonde hair cut in a more severe style, dyed black as night itself with one large blood red steak in the front left side. Heavy makeup deepens her eyes, and pale skin to prove her dislike for all that prospers in the sunlight. She fondles the small padlock attached to a chain around her neck. If asked, she'd tell you how it was placed there by a boy or girl she once liked and kissed behind the bleachers on the last day of school before summer. She'd tell you how she once loved that person, but it would all be a lie. At this point, she's never even kissed
