Laundry Lust

I could tell Angie had stopped listening to me. It should make me mad, being ignored like that when I was in the middle of telling her about my day. And after she’d specifically asked to hear about it, too. But there’s something sweetly charming about the way she tries to concentrate on two things at once, and invariably fails.

Her eyes kept wandering over my shoulder to look at the young girl at the diner’s counter.

What’s the problem? I asked, knowing I might as well take an interest in whatever was occupying Angie. The sooner we got to the bottom of that, the sooner we could get back to our conversation.

Uh-huh, she mumbled, trying to keep up the pretense of listening to my story. That should also wind me up, but it didn’t. Nothing Angie did seemed to get on my nerves. It was almost weird, how I found her every habit and nuance to be so endearing.

Hey, hot stuff, I chuckled. I know you’re elsewhere. Mind if I come with you? She must have heard the change in my tone of voice, and her attention snapped back to our table.

God, I’m so sorry, she said, reaching quickly across the table to hold my hands. I’m awful! I didn’t mean to ignore you! I was earwigging those two at the counter. She fixed her gaze on me solidly, with a small frown appearing as she forced her concentration away from the little blonde girl who was talking to the waitress. I looked over my shoulder, to see the girl slowly lifting a large rucksack onto her back.

She looked heartbreakingly sad, and I knew instantly that’s why Angie’s attention had zoned in on her. She was a sucker for strays and hard luck cases.

What’s going on with her? I asked. Angie briefly fought the temptation to get back involved with whatever drama she’d overheard, but quickly caved in and leaned forward across the table so she could whisper to me.

That girl was asking if she could do a few chores here. In exchange for something to eat, I think she said. She must be broke and hungry, I guess. Angie’s frown softened into a look of pity as she spoke. She squeezed my hands tighter, and then let them go as she jumped up out of her seat.
