Dodging a lightning bolt again, Jerry Madison and his tainted soul entered the pure and pristine chapel. He held his daughter’s hand and his wife Lauren clung to his side. Six-year-old Mila wore her brand new white dress, and quietly sang to herself. Her shiny black shoes clicked on white tiled floor as she skipped around still attached to his hand. As they crossed the threshold into the realm of the holy, Lauren underwent a metamorphosis. She transformed into a gorgeous social butterfly. However, Jerry exhibited no change. He was a larvae that suffered from stunted development. He yearned to stay in his ugly cocoon. Each Sunday he wondered why he hadn’t burst into flames yet. But he was positive that next week he would.
Entering the spacious nave, Jerry saw that the crowd was rapidly growing. Seeing their weekly pew by the exit was empty, they moved swiftly toward it. Sitting down on the cream-colored cushion, with the spine-wrenching back, he watched Mila drop to her knees and take out a sketchpad and a bag of crayons from her bag. . The sketchpad became her canvas, and she began drawing pictures of horses and butterflies. Periodically, she would stop to admire her artistry. And he did too. They looked like masterpieces to him even though her drawings would, at times, appear like unrecognizable creatures. Jerry observed her thin features, perfectly formed nose, and wavy, shoulder-length blonde hair complete with a ladybug beret. She
