My short stories and novellas tend to have one foot based in a real life situation and the other one set in an imaginary or parallel world. Much of my literary background comes from a nomadic lifestyle that began when I left the safe haven of my college town (Syracuse, NY) and headed for the Caribbean Coast of Mexico, where I planned to be a beach bum for a winter. Upon my return to the USA, I settled in the colorful city of New Orleans, but since those carefree days I have lived in many parts of the U.S. and traveled extensively in Canada and Europe. I blog at http://yeyeright.wordpress.com.

NO JOKES is what the sign said at the Laredo border crossing.

Underneath the ominous placard stood a six-foot-two border guard, looking like he just walked off the movie set of Cool Hand Luke. Even his Aviator sunglasses could not mask the X-ray vision that radiated from behind his eyeballs, like alien lasar guns.

Slowly, three men and a woman exited the Mexican taxi.

Twenty pesos, por fabor, said the driver.

Here's your fare, said Leo Garcia, a thin Chicano man from Austin, as he handed the driver a Mexican note.

And here's another five for you, said Antonio, Leo's father.

Muchas gracias, said the driver, as he walked around to the trunk and promptly retrieved the luggage and placed the well-used items on the ground.

Also emerging from the crowded vehicle were Harvey Schmidt and Suzanne Willow,
