About this ebook

Police Chief Elizabeth “Izzy” Morris enjoys keeping the peace in the small town of Kinsey in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. But when her seventeen-year-old daughter goes missing after a school dance and the mutilated corpse of the girl’s date is discovered in the nearby woods, Izzy’s police skills are stretched to their limits. Her only suspect is a stranger, a mysterious black man with no known past. When a second stranger appears, the investigation stalls. People she once trusted turn against her. The local banker’s autistic son begins to know things no one else does. And now something unspeakable prowls the woods. Joined by three friends and the man she once considered her enemy, Izzy races to find her daughter—and ends up trapped in the middle of a war between an ancient evil and the man who has stood in its way for nearly two thousand years.

This was a very good read (no pun intended)! Somewhat reminiscent of Stephen King, Matthews weaves a tale of supernatural intrigue, building characters that at once evoke sympathy and yet remain shrouded in uncertainty. Bart Owens is a figure with a mysterious past who is recalcitrant and unwilling to disclose much about himself to the people of Kinsey. But the chief of police wants answers for she has multiple murders on her hand and her own daughter is missing. The disappearance and murders coincide with arrival of Owens and the even stranger Webber. Both men claim to be in the small town to help, but both are mysterious and both are hiding something, so who is telling the truth, if either. Matthews weaves an interesting plot revealing just enough to entice the reader deeper into the tale seeking answers. His characters are real and they draw your sympathy, empathy, and in some cases even a measure of loathing. Who are these two men and what are their real purposes? A compelling tale of good and evil, right and wrong, power and humility spun with skill and creativity.

I won this book on GoodReads.I literally had no idea what this book was going to be about. I try to make it a habit to not look at descriptions or such of books I have won, that way I don't have any preconceived ideas about what it will be. In a nut shell: There is a monster on the loose killing people. Police Chief Izzy Morris' daughter has been abducted. A strange man comes into town who claims to be able to help. A lot of fighting and law breaking goes on. Then the book ends in a way that even a Seer couldn't predict. The suspense was high through the whole book, which was great because I was on the edge of my chair from chapter one. However at times it seemed that the suspense was forced especially when it was 2 pages of Owens explaining why he doesn't have time to explain things. Everyone in the story was very cryptic and elusive (even during their personal reflections). I get why the author did it, it worked, it made me want to go on to figure out what what up as well as feel Izzy's frustration. The ending set itself up for a sequel which I haven't yet decided if I would read or not...I am leaning towards a "Yes" but I am still uncertain. This isn't my typical genre so I am out of my reviewing comfort zone here.Overall a very engaging and entertaining read, but reading it once was enough. If you like fantasy and cop dramas then this is for you!

I received this book as an early review with Library thing. The book started out slow, but did quickly become a book that couldn't be put down. The end was a little disappointing but hopefully things will be cleared up with a sequel.

This book started out slow but quickly grabbed my attention and I found it hard to put down. The action came and went throughout the story with some parts not quite making sense to the story. I really liked the character Bart Owen and the mystery surrounding him. Just when you think you have him figured out something news pops up and leaves you wondering about who he really is. The ending left me with many unanswered questions that hopefully will lead to another book in this story. I would recommend this book to other readers.

I really liked this book ! Plenty of action and interesting characters. Too many details in some of the gory scenes for my liking though. The ending was a bit unclear to me. It seems like this book would be a good start to a series, and I would love to read the rest.

This book wasn't my usual type, but pulled me in. This book left we wondering many things throughout. Some things didn't make sense to me in life BUT it is a story. I enjoyed the writer's style of writing and I believe that is what kept me going through the book (or going back to the book). I am giving the book the rating I am because although I enjoyed the writer the story just wasn't my thing. I would recommend it to a friend if they were looking for something to read. I appreciated the opportunity to review this book for Early Reviewers.

I liked the beginning of the book, but I was not crazy about the ending. I am no prude but the bad language in this book felt like it did not belong, just page filler. The book starts out great. It was exciting and I could not wait to find out what would happen next. By the end of the book I was a little confused and could not figure out the correlation between some of the characters. I hope that there is a second book that explains things in a little more detail.

This book was not one I was able to really get into. The writing seemed somehow slow and a bit off in the beginning chapters and it didn't hold my interest. It also seemed to be a very self important book, but given the descriptions in the beginning I had no idea why. I didn't find this intriguing, but rather, annoying.

Interesting concept; good action scenes; reminded me of Lee/Childs novels. Felt some loose ends left and the ending seemed rushed. Had a hard time getting into it in the beginning but then it took off!!

I thought this book was ok , not great for me. I agree with other reviewers about there being a bit of confusion and too many loose ends left unanswered. I think it will not make a great stand alone book but needs a follow up to explain the importance of the child and his abilities among a few other points. I would still read the next one to find out what happens.

This was the first early readers book I received from Journal Stone and I am a fan! I am a big fan of horror and also action adventure (Lee Child - Jack Reacher). This book had both and then some! This author is one to keep your eye out for! I read this book in two nights and it was a real page turner! I loved the supernatural twist in the story and I loved the Jack Reacher type drifter main character! I felt like I was in the small town with the characters trying to figure out where the missing people where. I definitely will be reading future books by Brian W. Matthews!

I had absolutely no expectations about this book and decided that I wanted to read it solely based on the fact that it was based in the Michigan UP. As I made my way through the book, it was obvious that this would be one of those that I wouldn't be able to put down. And it was - for the first 2/3 of the book. The last 1/3 of the book felt as though it was rushed and disjointed. It was as if the author had no idea how he was going to take all of the pieces and finish the puzzle. That being said, it was still an interesting read and I'd read the next offering from the author.

Forever Man is the story of Izzy, a police chief in a small town, trying to find her daughter who disappeared in very strange circumstances. At the beginning I had to force myself to keep reading. But after the first third of the book, things started to improve. I enjoyed the story up until the end where it seemed the author was in a rush to finsh the book. The conclusion was unrealistic and left a lot of loose ends. I would assume that there will be a second book to follow the first. It was an okay read.

"Forever Man” aspires to be a novel of suspense and horror. However, the genre’s requisite suspense-building-to-a-cataclysmic-conclusion simply never occurs . . . the scope and direction of the story was easily determined in its early pages and there are no unforeseen surprises. Generally, the story plods along, unfolding in an uneven but totally predictable manner. The result is that, instead of being drawn into the story, the reader remains more of a dispassionate observer standing on the sidelines and watching the action unfold. Perhaps this could have been overlooked, but “Forever Man” has a fatal flaw: the inclusion of far too much gratuitous profanity and the author’s apparent desire to include [mostly unnecessary] expletives on almost every page. This debases the characters to the point that reader identification with any of them is almost non-existent; it interrupts the flow of the written word, and it insults the reader. Forty-two repetitions of “f***” in one form or another does not bode well for readers bonding with the characters or for reader buy-in for the few kernels of real story buried somewhere beneath a plethora of foul language. Even more regrettable is that, in relegating so much of the dialogue to invective-laced diatribe, the author also destroys his opportunity to display his true writing talents . . . doubly regrettable in light of the few isolated moments of truly creative writing that do shine though in this book. Unfortunately, the eBook version of “Forever Man” is in desperate need of a copy editor. Several times the reading falters with sentences that are either missing words or that include superfluous words, causing an instant break in the flow of the writing. Grammatical errors and misspellings such as “Sherriff,” “eye witness,” and “half-tracked” should have been corrected early on as should the inconsistent spelling of the name Brittney/Brittany. Each chapter heading has the chapter number written twice; one section displays its title twice . . . annoying and unnecessary, these stumbling blocks mentally trip the reader and further distance him or her from the story the author is attempting to tell.

I really hate to leave a book unfinished, but I just couldn’t muster up the strength to finish this one. It was pretty bad. I think that the idea was good but the author could use the services of a good editor.

At the start, I had great hopes for this book. Interesting story and characters. Fast paced and easy to read. At the end of the book, I felt disappointed. SPOILER**** The end of the story was just not believable and it was a little deflating. It was as if the author got bored in the last 50 pages and rushed to finish the story leaving many of the character's stories hanging. **** END SPOILER

I really enjoyed this book. At points, I felt I couldn't put it down, things were moving so fast and were so exciting. I enjoyed the good vs. evil themes, and the character development. It was especially rewarding at the end to get to figure out how the creature was created. However, as a few others have noted, this really felt more like a first in a series, with a lot of loose ends left hanging, not explained to my satisfaction. Kevin was a great character, and I wanted to know so much more about him, his von Kliner's autism, what was so important to the good vs evil guys, and what his moments of lucidity meant. Especially the way that Izzy left things with Gene, it really feels like another book is in the works. If not, I'd be sorely disappointed with how the book was finished. Overall, really enjoyed it!

While initially captivating, this novel seemed almost to be written at two different times. The first half of the book moved along at a quick pace and allowed the reader to both develop an attachment to the characters as well as be intrigued by the story itself. I eagerly flipped pages and had to force myself to put the book down. However, the second half of the novel felt pressured. The cat and mouse game (or hunter/prey in this case) became tedious and I noticed my focus began to waver. I was also suprised that the author chose to introduce and try to develop a new character 3/4 of the way through the novel while killing off characters he had spent pages developing earlier on in the text. I felt some of the characters were over-developed and simply not necessary (i.e. Brittany, Izzy's husband) and found that by the end of the novel I no longer remembered character motivation. While the story initially seems to revolve around the kidnapping of Izzy's daughter, by midway through it seemed that the kidnapping was merely an afterthought. Overall the author's language use and writing style were good, if only the plot was a little more focused and the characters a little better thought out.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one! A blend of thriller and supernatural which is faced paced and kept me gripped the whole way through. The writing is good albeit the descriptive text overlong in places. Sometimes it is fine to illustrate events in less words not more. Flashbacks to the "Forever Man's" long life were very interesting and added to the story as a whole. The book ended as if there is likely to be a sequel which I look forward to.

I started out really enjoying this book. A little mysterious, interesting characters, intriguing story line. Somewhere around page 250 or so, the author apparently looked at his watch and decided it was time to wrap it up. Start killing off characters that were previously seemingly immortal and leave ALL the interesting loose ends just hanging. The main theme of the story, the importance of the autistic boy, was never explained. Why did he have moments of absolute clarity? Did this continue, get better, get worse?? We are also left wondering just who/what the 2 guys chasing him were and how they came to be. One of them is asked this as a direct question, so obviously the author considered it. Either he didn't have an answer or was just done writing and didn't want to be bothered with it. A lot of roads were started down and abandoned. This would be a much more satisfying read had they been explored further.

I was given this book through the Library Thing Early Reviewer program. Initially, I really was enjoying this book. I am not a sci-fi person but it had enough of a mystery element that pulled me in. The author pulls you in immediately because the storyline starts from the very beginning. The characters were intriguing and relatable. The author also had an excellent way with words and described scenes in great detail. But, I also think it was a double edge sword because I think the author sometimes dragged on descriptions where I felt that I was skipping sentences because it can have a few paragraphs just to describe something that could be instead shortened to a few sentences. I felt that between the middle and ending is where I started to dislike the book. There was a character in the book that was told over and over again that they were special but we were never really told why until the end. I completely understand that an author has to give the element if surprise but I felt like I was never going to get close to finding out which left me frustrated. I needed answers a bit faster or more hints and I was not getting them. Overall, I give this book a 3.5 because the beginning to middle was great and I liked the character development but I think the author just has to fine tune the rest.

Intelligently written police procedural with an edge of monsters and good versus evil. It almost felt like the start of a series and I'd definitely read the other books if it were to become so. I'd like to know what happened to the characters, especially Kevin who has a rare form of autism.

Izzy Morris is the police chief in a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan whose daughter disappears after a school dance. When the body of her date is found, seemingly mauled by a wild animal, Izzy thinks the worst, and the search is on. But new arrival in town Bart Owens knows what's happened, and is in a war against it.Decent addition to the genre - nothing earth-shaking or ground-breaking, but fans of Dean Koontz will probably like it.

I received the e-book to do an early review for Librarything Early Reviewers program. Bart Owens is the title character and he is on his way to a town in upper Michigan to take a job at a local bar. When he arrives in Kinsey strange things start to happen and he is the main suspect in the disappearance of the police chief's daughter and the murder of her boyfriend. I will leave it at that because I do not want to give to much away. The story is part mystery and supernatural thriller. It was a good read and the way the story ended it looks like this might be the start of a series. I will be looking out for the followup if there is one.

This book was thrilling. I couldn't put it down. My favorite type of book is the one that when you reach the end of the chapter, you still can't put it down. Matthews did this masterfully! The plot was great, the characters well developed, and I was more than willing to suspend my disbelief regarding the fantastical aspects of the story. Kudos to Matthews!

3 Stars : Average. Some issues for characters, pushes suspension of disbelief (especially in action scenes) with writing/editing problems as well. However, nothing enough to make me put the book down. I'm sure this will improve in time and I don't think most people will notice. The comparison to Koontz and King is obvious so let's get that out of the way.Liked it but didn't love it. Recommend for fans of the genre, fans of Koontz and King.Forever Man is a fast paced supernatural thriller with horrific...things and terrifying moments. There are a few of those WTF scenes that really stand out as the high points and the hallmark of this genre. Mostly, it's a time race and I’m not talking about the NASCAR kind either. Characters are decently crafted (though they aren't all decent people). Izzy is really my kind of woman and I enjoyed the journey with her. As solid as the characters appear there were times when they wavered and I questioned their decisions/actions/reactions. The environment and setting were fine, no real complaints yet nothing really stand out. The action is done movie style and I distinctly remember thinking momentary remarks of pffft, yeah right during some of them. I really didn’t see the ending coming. In fact, I didn’t actually predict anything in this book, which is awesome. Looking back, there’s things I clearly should have remembered and seen coming but I didn’t notice while reading. There’s still a lot of questions unanswered when Forever Man is over. With those loose ends, it’s hard to comment on the world building, logic or follow through on the basic premise of this book....Actually, there’s one thing I’m going to tease out. One character leading one side of the fight first says, “but it’s only me! I do things alone.” then goes on to talk about a network of people that help them. Ummm...so clearly they aren’t doing it alone yet no one seems to point this out.I am curious to see where the series goes from here in an off-handed kind of way. Continuing reading though will depend on if the next book hooks me. It's not a must-read, need it now. Just another book on list that doesn't really jump out. While reading it's enjoyable and I recommend it. It just doesn't have staying power for me. Once I was done, I was done. Motivating me to continue is easier for the second book but it's not a instant buy.

2012-12-03 - I came into this with really low expectations and the first page where the bus "shrugged" to a stop and the landscape was "prosaic" had me dreading going any further. But that was yesterday and today I'm about 75% of the way through it. It not world shaking, and there are a few rough sports, and annoyances (Remington 700P "assault rifle") but it's well done and it's got me turning pages.2012-12-04: Annoyances seemed more frequent at the end. Odd word choices and bits of hyperbole, characters making odd choices. Nothing horrible, but kept breaking my suspension of disbelief. Overall, it was a good read, but it didn't generate any interest in following what I assume will be a series.
