By the time the bus rolls to a stop in front of a seedy terminal in the decaying heart of a strange city five hundred miles from the hometown and family she hates with a fiery passion, Gretchen’s ass is completely numb, her gum has lost its flavor, and the demon who lives inside her lungs is fiending for a toke. Not that there’s any left, she’d smoked the last of her dank hours and hundreds of miles ago.

She grabs her only bag and disembarks the metal box full of farts, halitosis, and unwashed armpit stank. The bus station is housed in a Streamline Moderne bunker of filthy glass block, tarnished chrome, and graffiti scarred concrete. Discarded crack vials crunch beneath Gretchen’s feet as she marches towards the entrance whilst doing her best to ignore the mass of beggars and hustlers who barrage her and her fellow passengers with pleas and enticements: Wanna buy a watch? Spare change? Need pills? Gotta cigarette?
