About this ebook
Allano has recorded his backpacking adventures whilst traveling in South America for extended periods of time, traveling either alone or with companions from Australia. By going in November to March this avoids the hot Australian summer. The coolness of the Andean altiplano climate makes for a pleasant journey.
He visits the Angel Falls in Venezuela, the highest in the world, and the Iguazu Falls in Brazil/Argentina, the largest and most impressive waterfall in the world. In between is the mighty Andes mountain chain along which Allano makes his way fraternizing with the Indians of Inca origin that live there.
Geology, mining and gemstones are of special interest and opportunities for fishing are explored. The handicrafts of the Indians are much admired. Ecuador on the altiplano is the place to buy Indian ponchos, jumpers and weavings made from llama, alpaca and sheep wools.
The gemstones of Brazil get a close examination with a visit to the gem cutting works and museum of Sterns at Ipanema. The gem mining regions of Minas Gerais are visited. Allano's early geochemical researches on the color of emerald and tourmaline are reviewed.
In conclusion, when you have a broad spectrum of interests, in Allano's case these are geology, gemstones, handicrafts, fishing, cookery, photography, the Spanish language, and local history, it is impossible to be bored with one's travels. There is always something new to learn every day which makes life worthwhile. You only live once. Make the most of it!
