In 2015, after completing a packrafting expedition in the Nicaraguan rainforest, we wound up in the ramshackle port town of Puerto Cabezas, or “Port,” as the locals call it, on the Atlantic coast.The day was scorching hot with unrelenting heat waves, so hanging near a crumbling pier opting for more water time seemed only natural. Before long we stumbled upon an elderly tribal fisherman commuting down the coast to his village in his rusty, weathered panga.
