A Billion Nightmares - Alexis Shore
One
Penelope looked down and out of the window, hoping to witness Jake stopping outside and taking a moment to look back up at her. Instead she saw something else.
The van pulled up, and she thought he was about to get run over. But when the side door opened, and three masked men bundled Jake inside, she felt her stomach lurch, heard her heart thump, and struggled to catch her breath.
Jake was being kidnapped, and she just stood there, watching.
When the van pulled off in a screech of tires and plume of blue smoke, she realised what was going on; her mind finally processed it and started to send signals to her body.
The adrenaline started to flow, and she turned on her heels, bolting for the door. Misjudging her bearings, she smacked into the side of her couch, stubbing her toe so hard she was sure she heard it crack.
No time to wallow in the agony though; she strode on, forgetting any pain throbbing in her foot. She reached the door and yanked it open, still with no idea what she was doing. When she saw Keisha sitting at her desk, Penelope blurted out the first words that came to mind.
Call the cops.
What? Why?
Keisha was wide eyed.
Jake’s been kidnapped,
Penelope called as she yanked open the outer door and started running down the stairs.
Her heels buckled under her, wrenching her left ankle so hard she toppled sideways into the wall, smacking her shoulder hard. There was too much pain in her body to process now, and all her focus was on getting to her car.
She fell forward, stumbling down three stairs too fast, jolting her knees under her own uncontrolled weight. At the bottom of the flight, she smacked through the door and out on to the street.
The heat of the sun burned into her face, glaring in her eyes, so bright, too bright to see anything properly. She staggered a few steps, holding her hand to her head, trying to glimpse the van down the street.
After its initial burst of speed, it had slowed to a more pedestrian pace, and was waiting patiently at the lights. No need to draw any more attention to itself she guessed.
In her mind’s eye, she saw Jake fighting against them in the bowels of the van, kicking and spitting, scratching and kicking, using every last ounce of energy to resist the men pinning him down and trussing him up.
Later she might take a moment to consider why she was chasing after a man she barely knew; would take a moment to admire her own sense of justice, but right now, all she could think about was getting to her car.
The alarm chirped as she ran to it, pulling open the door and thrusting herself down and into the seat. It took absolute concentration to aim the key into the ignition because her hands were trembling uncontrollably. Thankfully the engine roared into life, screaming as she pressed her foot into the
