Hear about new releases first. Sign up for my newsletter at http://simplyunbound.com/mailing-list/ My life started on January 1st, 1986. I was the second child born in Madison, Wisconsin that year. My mom has never let me forget that there was no prize for second place. The colder-than-Pluto winters of my hometown offered ample time to read. My favorites included Asimov's Foundation series, Le Guin's Earthsea trilogy, and the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook, 2nd Edition. In 2004 I enrolled at the University of Minnesota. A dumpster full of broken calculators and semester in Tokyo later, I graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Japanese. Fresh out of school and thirsty for adventure, I accepted a contract to teach in South Korea. Three years of Kim Jong-il's threats to plunge Seoul into a sea of flame quenched that thirst. I returned home with only a suitcase full of kimchi and a dream. That dream was to write. I holed up in my bedroom and wrote furiously. After aborting my first attempts at a novel, I began work on what would become The Northland Chronicles. Nine months later I released A Stranger North. I've been writing and publishing ever since. As of 2015 I eat, sleep, and write in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Ramses' Thunder
If only he’d had a car.
What was a car?
A car was a vehicle that could transport a person from place to place. A car, faster and stronger than even the most formidable beast of burden, subsisted on a diet of pure gasoline and exhaled thick plumes of gray smoke. The car had been the defining invention of the 20th century, a commodity which had given new meaning to the American dream. A car was a glorious machine that could cover hundreds of miles a day.
A car was also a luxury that Ramses Brushnell had to do without. A mere mortal lacking a motor, Ramses could cover a few dozen miles a day at best.
Ramses was making his way south toward the Restoration Army’s central headquarters. He carried only the most essential of a gear: a small pack on his back and a pistol at his side.
Presently, he was passing through the forests of northern Minnesota. During the dog days of summer the forest was like a jungle. While the lush green leaves overhead protected him from the stifling heat of the afternoon sun, those same leaves also trapped moisture and kept it close to the ground, ensuring that Ramses’ trek was a humid one. Already sweat had crept into every last thread of his green Restoration Army fatigues. The well-worn uniform would need replacing as soon as he arrived at HQ.
Unfortunately, it would still take days, perhaps even weeks, of walking before Ramses arrived at his destination. If ever he’d wanted a car, it was now. Yet he knew the possibility of finding a car, to
