21 Things You Gotta Know About the NFL (For Those Who Just Don't Get It!) - Marc Hoover

    Introduction

In America, the National Football League (NFL) has surpassed basketball, baseball, hockey and soccer to become America’s favorite pastime. No other sport compares to the NFL or its passionate fans. For instance, where else can you see a sports fan wearing a giant plastic piece of cheese on his head? If you visit legendary Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, you will see the Cheeseheads cheering on their beloved Green Bay Packers.

Then if you head east to Pittsburgh, you will see Heinz Field engulfed in black and gold as thousands of Pittsburgh Steelers fans wave their terrible towels. So what is this madness? It’s not madness; it’s just your average NFL fan.

This book is a quick and easy read for those who just don’t get what the NFL is all about, as well as serious NFL fans and anyone interested in becoming an NFL fan.

The NFL is known for creating football widows and football junkies. Football widows often lose their men to the NFL from September to Super Bowl Sunday. So if you become a football widow, this book will provide you with enough basic information to become a knowledgeable NFL fan. Then you will understand why your man spills his beer and nachos on his lap whenever his team throws something called an interception.

Then you have the football junkie...

The junkie craves NFL football like a child craves candy. Once preseason begins, the junkie needs a football fix. The desire to see a game can be so overwhelming fans will watch a battle between two teams they hate. A true NFL junkie can multitask. While watching a game on television, he or she may also check the latest NFL updates on their cell phone; all this while following their fantasy team on a laptop computer.

As a true NFL fan, I have followed the sport since the late 70s and have watched many memorable games. I have witnessed the NFL grow from a game with thousands of fans to a beloved global sport with a fan base in the millions. A younger generation may find it difficult to believe that the NFL hasn’t always been a global product.

In recent years, the NFL has expanded into external markets and has played regular season games in Canada, Mexico and England. Younger fans may also find it surprising to know that past players played more for the love of the game than for a check. In the early days, players often held down regular jobs while playing football on the side.

Times have changed and so has the game. Advancements in nutrition, medicine, safety, and social media have changed the game forever. Originally, the NFL lacked glamour, red carpet moments, wardrobe malfunctions or celebrities. Today, it’s not uncommon for celebrities to share sharing their football picks on some form of social media. The NFL is ubiquitous, with fans from every social circle imaginable. Currently, Super Bowl Sunday is one of the most anticipated sporting events in America. The average NFL fan
