IAN GUNDESEN
30 years in Real Estate and loving every day of it. Gundy says you know you’ve done a good job when your clients and solicitors refer people to you. Gundy’s ability to negotiate and close deals to both the satisfaction of vendors and buyers is legendary, as are his auctioneering skills. He has been New Zealand’s No 1 strike rate auctioneer (selling under the hammer) 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, averaging 91%.
This book is designed to provide useful information about Real Estate and will hopefully assist you to make some wise beneficial decisions whether you are buying or selling.
In the beginning, God made man – then he made Gundy.
Anyone who knows Ian Gundesen will immediately recognise that as something he could well have said. The day he stops laughing is the day he stops living, as you’re about to find out. Before you do, he tells us a bit more about himself:
I was born in Hawera just a few years before the outbreak of World War II but I swear I had nothing to do with it. I mean, at just three and a half pounds, my mother hardly noticed my arrival, but I’m happy to say it didn’t stay that way for long.
We didn’t have any money, but we had standards and we were brought up to believe that parents had to be married to have children. Looking back now, it’s those values and standards I learned as a child that have stayed with me all my life.
I left school at 15 to help Mum and Dad on the farm they were working on at the time. At 21 it was time to make my own way in the world and I joined the police force. Although I loved the job and the challenges, the outdoor life beckoned and I went sharemilking with my charming wife Marion (she told me I had to call her that, but she was right, she is charming, and she laughs at my jokes).
We worked hard, eventually bought our own farm and along the way had three children, Ross, Grant and Christine. In 1980 we sold the farm and I got a job in real estate. More than 30 years later, I’m still in real estate and can honestly say I’ve loved every minute of it.
I sketched the cartoons and many thanks to Shane Dunlop for turning them into the miniature masterpieces you see in the book. I consider myself lucky to have a sense of humour that works for me, and hopefully I’ll put a smile on your face while giving you some food for thought.
Finally, try smiling, I’ve found it’s contagious.
Ian Gundesen.
