A small restaurant with a saint-Gobain window, pots of violet lavenders potted alongside the ledge stood at the corner of a cobbled street. Pale women with red lips, men with costly watches appeared lost in reflection as if they found the answers to their lives on the other side of the stainless, spotless glass. Cars had lined up alongside the footpath; lines of black, white, red and the occasional blue and orange contrasted the crème walls of the posh restaurant. The guard that stood at the green front door with a golden door knob wore a faint blue shirt and saluted every man and woman who entered. Sahib, Madame, Sahib.
