Prologue
Fuckin’ A Ditty Bag
– A Sailor’s Rousing, YES –
(A is for Affirmative!)
I read that ditty was a distortion of ditto. Sailors stored two of some sorts of gear in it, toothbrush, comb, for example. Replacements were tough to find underway. The simple off-white cotton sack, 9 X 16, with a drawstring at the top might remind you of something a woman would use. Your name and service number were stenciled on a spot near the bottom on what was deemed the front. A strong laundry marker that brought on a welcome buzz did that lettering. My bag was not for storing personal items. A
