About this ebook

This remarkable adaptation of the hit television show Broadchurch from Erin Kelly (based on Chris Chibnall series) tells the story of a shattered family, a reeling town, and the two imperfect detectives trying to bring them answers.

In the sleepy British seaside town of Broadchurch, Detective Ellie Miller has just returned from vacation, only to learn that she's been passed over for a promotion at work in favor of outsider Alec Hardy. He, escaping the spectacular failure of his last case, is having trouble finding his way into this tight-knit community wary of new faces. But professional rivalry aside, both detectives are about to receive some terrible news: 11-year-old Danny Latimer has been found murdered on the beach.

For Ellie it's a personal blow; Danny was her older son's best friend. She can't believe anyone in Broadchurch would ever have harmed him. But Alec considers everyone, even Danny's parents, suspect in his death. It's a living nightmare for everyone involved…even before the press arrive and start stirring up the secrets every town member keeps hidden behind closed doors.

I won advance reader copy of this book from Goodreads. I absolutely loved the show and was hoping the book would be just as good. But just like movie versions of books are never as good as the book, I found that a novelization of a TV show is not as good as the show itself. It didn't provide any additional details or insights into the characters. As a standalone book, it would be an enjoyable mystery.

The coastal town of Broadchurch is preparing for its summer season. The atmosphere changes quickly when the unthinkable happens. The body of an 11 year-old boy is found on Harbour Cliff Beach. The body is identified as Danny Latimer, who lived in town with his family. It is determined early on that this murder was not committed by a random opportunist, but perhaps by someone local. And probably someone they all know, someone the family knows and respects. Broadchurch is a town laced with secrets and the story unfolds with an intense and emotional plot as dark secrets and betrayals are unveiled throughout. Deep feelings surface as the author really gets into the hearts and minds of the characters – intriguing characters with very complex issues. The storyline has mystery, drama, and powerful emotions that evolve for an enthralling read. The ending builds into a big crescendo – a stunning conclusion! There were so many twists and turns that kept you guessing until the end – certainly not predictable.I was not aware of the TV series, but after reading the book I’d be very interested in watching it. Everything about this book drew me in – the multi-faceted storyline, compelling characters, and a conclusion that totally surprised me. My only negative comment is that there are so many characters to keep track of that I was getting them confused. But the ending was so powerful and emotional that I couldn’t give this novel anything less that a 5 star rating. I highly recommend. I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

In a small seaside town, the body of 11-year-old Danny Latimer is found spread-eagled on the beach below the cliffs. DI Hardy, new to the area, is in charge of the investigation. He is just off a failed investigation of another child murder and is harbouring a secret that could jeopardize this new case. DS Ellie Miller, bitter about losing the promotion to Hardy, knows everyone in this small town and finds it almost impossible to be objective. Her son was best friends with Danny, she knows the parents and, worse, she knows that the perpetrator is likely to be someone she knows and trusts, someone very close to home. Broadchurch is the novelization of the award-winning British series of the same name. The series does a brilliant job of showing the dynamics of a small town, the shiny happy exteriors of people forced to live in close proximity and the secrets and lies lurking just below the surface. I have read many books turned into movies and TV shows but rarely one that does the opposite, turn a TV series into a book. The question had to be how well would a TV series translate from the small screen to the page especially one of the caliber of Broadchurch since so much of the strength of the series comes from the visual and the actors.Fortunately, author Erin Kelly does a very nice job of adaption. She follows the series fairly closely while giving us insight into the thoughts and feelings of the characters. Like the series, the novel tends to begin slowly but gain speed and suspense as it rushes to its conclusion. And that is where I would say I found my one criticism of the book – in the series, there are subtle hints about who dunnit that are lacking in the book, making the solution seem somewhat less satisfying. But, then, this book and the series are both less about the mystery and more about the lives, relationships and secrets of the characters and Kelly does an excellent job of creating the same tensions that makes the series so watchable.

Another group I was in was mentioning the television show Gracepoint, I am not a big television watcher with the exception of a few shows and sports. Anyway we decided to watch Gracepoint, at that point I was half way done with this book, and to mu surprise the case on the show was the exact same as the story in the book. Wonder if they will exactly follow the book? This is set in rural Dorset, and the people in the town are a varied mix. Many are hiding secrets and I loved the mix of reporters and journalists. Who will find out what first. A ten year old boy is the victim and the author does a brilliant job showing the family as they try to stay together while dealing with their pain and grief. She also did a wonderful job showing the best and worst of a small village. Everyone knows each other, but do they really? Who is actually telling the truth and who has the most to hide.I loved this well done classic mystery, following the uncovering of evidence and the mix of personal and professional lives. Certainly hope Kelly goes on to write another.

This book is an “adaptation of the hit television show Broadchurch” which I started watching on a friends Netflix account, got hooked (hint: it has David Tennant in it) and then couldn’t watch it for a while. I asked my nephew to find it for me and he did, but due to server issues I wasn’t able to watch it. I requested it from the library which is when I noticed there was a book Broadchurch. The book follows the story line of the TV series almost exactly. The author fleshes out the characters, lets you know their thoughts and feelings, in a sense, expands on the story. In another review, someone stated this was not her story, I would say her handling of it made it her story. She does an admirable job of keeping the reader engaged.Who killed Danny Latimer? Alec Hardy, an experienced investigator new to the area suspects everyone. Ellie Miller, who has lived in Broadchurch her whole life can’t believe anyone there could have harmed Danny. The fact that Hardy was given a promotion promised to Miller plus knowing his last case blew up spectacularly, puts the two at odds.Woven around the mystery is the revealing of peoples secrets, the intrusion of the press and how grief affects people. Hardy and Miller have to keep the peace while trying to solve a crime that seems to putting everyone against their friends. Innocent people are hurt while the guilty one is apparently going free. When the guilty party is finally identified, that puts more shockwaves and rifts through the community.A very interesting read.

I really liked this one! I'm a fan of Broadchurch and am currently watching Gracepoint so I wanted to read this. As it's a novelisation of the program, I didn't expect any big surprises or twists but I wanted to see if there was any more depth or patina to the characters who populate this town. I'm happy to say, there was. I liked how this was written and truly felt I got an even closer look into the lives of the people. I've no idea where the second series of Broadchurch is going but if there's another novelization by Erin Kelly, I'll be reading it. Definitely recommended for fans of the series and for anyone interested in a good mystery (if you've never seen the series) set in a small town.

It's just another day in the small seaside town of Broadchurch...until a boy's body is found on the beach. The small town, where everyone knows and trusts everyone else turns on itself. Neighbors and friends are now suspects. The family of the boy is of course devastated, but the effects ripple outward to the whole town. Secrets are revealed and lives are ruined. But the identity of the killer is the biggest betrayal of all. I saw the first episode of the Broadchurch TV series and the book was successful in evoking the same feelings. I think this was an unusually good novelisation of a TV program.

Based on the UK series Broadchurch. I did watch the series and liked it. It follows pretty much scene by scene of the series. It lets you get a deeper look at the characters and what is is they are thinking. I do not feel the characters come off as strongly in the book as they did on the screen. Having seen the series and being able to visualize what I was reading from there was helpful and made the book exciting. I do not know if I had not seen the series if I would of enjoyed the book or not. It is hard to look at the writing objectively when one is constantly connecting and comparing it to something else. I think any fan of the series would enjoy the book.
