Stevens is the narrator of The Remains of the Day.
He happens to be an English butler. Most of his life he has been dedicated to the loyal service of Lord Darlington.
The story talks in increasing details about Lord Darlington in flashbacks.
As the novel opens, Stevens gets a letter from Miss Kenton, his former colleague. She writes in detail about her married life. Going through the letter, Stevens believes that the hints given in the description of her marriage suggest that she is not happily married.
Stevens has a new employer, a very rich American named Mr. Farraday. He gives Stevens a well deserved break and allows him to take his car. He tells him to go on a motoring trip.
Stevens begins his journey. He begins to think about his immutable loyalty to Lord Darlington. He also thinks about his relationship with his own late father.
He is eventually forced to think about the true nature of his relationship with Miss Kenton.
