Dope Boy
The ball field lining the edge of the park ran alongside the Ohio River for about a mile. Normally, the field would be completely abandoned at this time. It was a week night. It was late and extremely dark. Hardly visible, a blue Lincoln was parked. Siting inside, Taye was nervous. Shit, he thought, it shouldn't go down this way. Quick in and out, a simple robbery. Simple . . . ain't nothing simple with Poet. He wanted to go in alone. It wasn't my idea. It never is with Poet. His idea was for us to steal this piece of shit car, and drop him off at King's crib on the east side of town. Now I'm sitting here with my ass out waiting. If a cop rolls up on me, I'm fucked. All because of Poet's ideas.
It's been that way since we started school. He was always a leader type. The poster boy for rebellion. Or maybe, I was just always a follower. A few of us dropped out of school after he did. He was on the fast track. He learned the drug game from the old guys, then took us dummies under his wing. I'm the last one left out of all of us who started with Poet. The others are in prison or dead. Poet showed me how to survive the game. Every twisted, frayed knot of it. I've seen terrible things and done worse. Now, I want out of the game. That's my idea. Poet don't know it yet, but after tonight, I'm out for good. The world will be a better place with one less dope boy in it.
Suddenly, Taye noticed headlights approaching.
