Industriousness has two components—work and planning. Let’s start with work.
There is no substitute for hard work. If we look for shortcuts or the easiest way to complete any given task, we will only put out a minimum effort. We might get by for a while, but in the long run we won’t fully develop our talents.
As a basketball player, I wanted to be in the best possible physical condition. There was a time when I’d tell myself, I’m going to be in better condition than anyone else. As I grew older, my thinking changed to, I’m going to be in the best possible condition I can be in. I had learned that I only have control over myself.
Off the court, I worked hard, too. As head basketball coach at UCLA, each year, a couple of weeks after our last game, I would begin research on some aspect of the sport. I would talk with other coaches, read books and examine every angle of that year’s topic. My research would last for the entire
