About this ebook
The classic spy thriller of lethal computer-age intrigue and a maniac’s private cold war, featuring the same anonymous narrator and milieu of The IPCRESS File.
The fourth of Deighton’s novels to be narrated by the unnamed employee of WOOC(P) is the thrilling story of an anti-communist espionage network owned by a Texan billionaire, General Midwinter, run from a vast computer complex known as the Brain.
After having been recruited by Harvey Newbegin, the narrator travels from the bone-freezing winter of Helsinki, Riga and Leningrad, to the stifling heat of Texas, and soon finds himself tangling with enemies on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5England, ca 1965???
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I've previously read a few books by Deighton so was looking forward to some spy action involving a dated supercomputer and some virus shenanigans, sadly however these two factors aren't really much of a focus for the story, but rather the actions of those around them. Although to be fair there is a corny description of the computer which at least filled some of the dated supercomputer desires I had.Overall I preferred SS-GB & XPD to this, I think they are better examples of Deighton's work.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Harry Palmer (Pseud.) travels to Finland for chilly romance, and keep the two superpowers from falling to blows over the virus held by a crazy billionaire. It's a fun read.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Fast paced - if far fetched and somewhat dated. There are the origins of Bernard Sansom in the unnamed narrator of this book - the sardonic approach to authority and the quiet efficiency with which he operates suggest this. However, the voice is not quite so clear, and the far fetched plot means this is not up to the level he attains later.
