About this ebook
A completely new edition of the definitive biography of Chopin, unavailable for many years, by one of the finest of contemporary European historians.
Two centuries have passed since Chopin’s birth, yet his legacy is all around us today. The quiet revolution he wrought influenced the development of Western music profoundly, and he is still probably the most widely studied and revered composer. For many, he is the object of a cult. Yet most people know little of his life, of the man, his thoughts and his feelings; his public image is a sugary blur of sentimentality and melodrama.
Adam Zamoyski cuts through the myths and legends to tell the story of Chopin’s life, and to reveal all that can be discovered about him as a person. He pays particular attention to recent revelations about the composer's health, and places him within the intellectual and spiritual environment of his day.

Reviews for Chopin

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5balanced and objective treatment of C's life inviting appreciation of his music.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5An enjoyable, well-researched, restrained biography, with a particular focus on day-to-day life, friendships, relationships and the business of being a 19th century celebrity. Zamoyski takes care not to stray beyond what he has hard evidence for, occasionally taking aim at other biographers with no such compunctions. He would make a good Wikipedia editor. The biggest disappointment in the book for me was his apparent lack of interest in music. He never delves deeper into Chopin's music than casual references to what was being composed at a certain period. Three mazurkas, two waltzes and a ballad - that's apparently all we want to know about what Chopin was doing musically over a summer. Perhaps this is understandable because his musical output is well discussed elsewhere. Still, it felt like something was missing.
