About this ebook

Sir Launcelot of the Lake dwelt within a magic lake which was the enchanted habitation of the Lady Nymue of the Lake. He was there trained in all the most excellent arts of chivalry by Sir Pellias, the Gentle Knight. All of this was told in this book and many other things concerning Sir Launcelot and several other worthies who were Companions of the Round Table and who were very noble and excellent knights both in battle and in court.

Howard Pyle

Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was a celebrated artist, author, and teacher -- and a primary figure in the history of children's literature. Not only did he guide and inspire such artistic talents as N. C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and Jessie Willcox Smith, but he was also a master storyteller in his own right. The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Pepper & Salt, and The Wonder Clock are among the many stories and folktales that he wrote and illustrated.

The Pyle retellings of the Arthur stories were the version which meant "Arthur" to me when I was young. I loved the illustrations and was not put off by the "forsoothly" language. I originally read them in big fat hardcover versions in the Bowling Green Ohio Public Library and only bought these paperback Dover reprints more recently.
