About this ebook

When Marla gets lost off-trail during a holistic herbalism class, she injures herself with the edge of a deadly thorn. She knows the thorn well enough to know it's poisonous, but the antidote hasn't been covered in class, and she suffers the horrors of knowing why she's slowly losing consciousness.
When she awakens to the handsome face of a fearsome-looking elf-type, she soon realizes he's saved her life. But he's got an enemy who could place her in danger, and there's the little problem of the undeniable attraction between them that makes it impossible for her to stay away for long.

If you'll follow me, I'll show you a curious plant that's got the flavor qualities of garlic without being overwhelmingly pungent. Just for fun, Marla's nerdy instructor invited with a chortle. He was one of those extra-informative types, and while she should be elated for any extra information she might be able to get her hands on, her mind was anywhere but on green studies today.

Marla's eyes flicked up to see Mr. Phelps push up the glasses that were always slipping down the bridge of his nose before he turned to lead them to the next spot. She sighed then and followed the rest of the group, folding her notebook and arms over her chest. Somehow she found herself trailing behind them once again. She was glad the next location was close, but despite her attempts to focus on the garlicky wonder they were being introduced to, her mind quickly took into a wander again.

She looked over the members of her class, all of them varying in age. She refused to feel bad she was 23 years old and only now preparing for her adult life. Many of her classmates were hobbyists who were much older. They were deeply invested in holistic herbalism, though, and it made her feel a little ashamed that she wasn't as disciplined. She'd thought this was what she wanted to do, but she wasn't so sure now that she was taking the actual classes.

Maybe it was just the instructor, but she hadn't been retaining much of the basics, and that would spell disaster when she finally took her test for the module.

Marla's gaze rose up from her thoughts, and she loosed a gasp. Where had everyone gone? Had she missed the instructor's dismissal? She hadn't heard a thing! She spun around, the long spiraling curls trailing her shoulders whipping about with the thin material of her Fall duster. She pulled it tighter around her thin curves, trying to decide on a direction to take, but her thoughts were a jumble.

Frowning, she decided to take the hill, hoping her attempts to think like the instructor would pay off.

She realized with certainty that it wouldn't, mere minutes later, and turned to glance down the small hill behind her. Bringing her hands to her head with a sigh, she pulled her hair from her eyes, hissing at the hot snag of a thorn cutting into the top of her thumb from the bush beside her.

Shit, she cursed, unthinkingly lifting her thumb to her mouth. She ripped it away from her tongue when she realized how quickly the digit had grown numb.

Not today. Please. Not now, she pleaded to whichever forest spirits might be listening.

Could the day get any worse?

Shaking her head, Marla inspected the tall hedge she'd cut herself on.

    Of course it could.

She'd led a life full of unfortunate moments up to this point. It was foolish of her to think her lot would change anytime soon. Frowning
