    Experiment Gone Wrong

    The End

Standing on the overhang, the group on the mountain watched silently.  They were waiting for the destruction of life as they had known it.  An experimental virus had been knowingly sprayed over the Army base they had called home.  The Government was testing to see what effect it would have on the base's population.  They had later learned the effects had been devastating and quickly spread nationwide.

Just minutes ago the group had listened to a radio emergency broadcast.  Fighter planes were on their way to drop incendiary bombs on all infected areas.  Apparently this was the only way to stop the virus.

An ear shattering roar passed over their heads as two jets raced towards the base in the valley.  The light of the explosions was so bright it hurt their eyes even from this distance.  Flames and dark billowing smoke rose high into the sky.  This must be what Hiroshima had looked like in World War II.

Thus ended civilization as they had known it.

Several months earlier a fateful phone call was made.  We're going to the reunion.  Get everything ready to go in forty eight hours.  Have to get back to work.  I love you, Cathy.

Col. Roger Danford snapped his cell phone closed and stuck it in his pocket.  Sitting in the jeep next to him was his younger brother Major William Danford.

Bill pocketed his cell phone and let out a long shaky breath.  Amy will call the people on her list and get the ball rolling.  What now?

"Let's head over to the motor pool and sign out the big RV.  After that, we'll go over to supply and borrow a few things. Roger flashed a nervous grin at his brother.  Don't let mom know how we got anything or she'll throw a fit."

Bill laughed at that.  He remembered when they were kids and had borrowed a couple of candy bars from the store.  Their mom had turned them every which way but lose.

When Roger and Bill started filling out the papers for the Rv, Roger's cell rang.  Son, just want to let you boys know that Mom and I can go a little early and take some stuff up for your reunion.  It would make a nice day trip for us.  Mom said to tell you we won't stay and ruin your fun.

Thanks, Dad.  Tell Mom she would probably be belle of the ball.  When Roger hung up he whispered to Bill, The folks know and are loading up now.

After the RV had been loaded with a variety of things, the private who had helped couldn’t hold back any longer.  Sirs, if I might ask, what are you going to do will all this?

A wild and crazy reunion with a bunch of no good buddies. replied Bill with a wink.

Well then Sir, might I suggest you hit the base liquor store next. The private grinned, "Sirs, remember my help in procuring the supplies when I'm up for promotion."

Will do. Roger slapped the young man on the shoulder and hoped the kid wouldn't get caught.  It was hard to think of leaving this soldier behind to an unknown fate.

At the end of their day, the brothers headed out in an RV filled to bursting with borrowed supplies.  They had skipped the liquor store.

Stopping just long enough to pick up their brother Jarod, the men headed towards the mountains.

Jarod was an auditor with the Army Audit Agency.  It was just a fluke of luck that the three brothers were stationed at the same base.  Their dad was retired military.  He
