About this ebook

Halloween, a serial killer's son and stoner zombies. These are things that make up Detritus, the dregs and bramble of Scott Colbert's twisted imagination. Spanning a period of five years these short pieces serve as an introduction to his work, as well as whetting your appetite for his weird western novella Barbed Wire Kisses.

    Author’s note

What you’re about to read comprises three of my favorite short pieces from the last five years or so. The oldest of these, Killer Weed, was the first piece of writing I’d completed in probably 15 years. The why’s and how’s of that are for another time however. When I did finally finish it, I was pretty damn happy with myself. Not because it’s great literature, it’s not (I have no illusions on that note), but I did have a lot of fun writing it. In spite of my dislike for zombies, I wanted to try my hand at writing about them, and have a little bit of a unique twist on the genre.

Forgotten Son was a poem written specifically for an anthology entitled Death in Common. The collection was edited by my friend and poetry mentor Rich Ristow. In spite of having three different publishers in the course of its life,  it’s out of print now though I will say, it’s still one of my favorite collections, period. The fact it was also my first sale is icing on the cake.

Bruises of Black and Orange was a blog post originally featured on a friend’s website many years ago. It was simply my reminiscing about one Halloween and is mostly true.

I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I enjoyed writing them. If you do enjoy it,
