You’re My Best Friend
The knocking on the door was relentless. Go away.
Diana pulled the blanket further over her head. She was comfortable on the couch. Burying herself in her apartment for the past week had been a good thing. She needed time to heal.
Diana, open up. I know you’ve been in your same scummy pyjamas for days. Time to rejoin the land of the living.
Great. Chris, royal pain in her arse and best friend since meeting at college in London a million years ago, or ten years if you wanted to be literal, was here to yell at her.
He knocked three more times in quick succession. Do you want me to call Mark for the spare key?
he threatened.
Diana bolted upright. You bloody wouldn’t,
she said, loud enough for him to hear.
Try me.
Huffing, Diana threw the blanket aside and stood, knocking over an empty bottle of wine in the process. She should really get rid of that before Chris started in on his ‘drowning her sorrows with alcohol’ lecture. She shrugged. To hell with hiding it. When a man you had been seeing for almost thirteen months dumped you over the phone, you had a right to a few glasses or ten of vino.
She shuffled to the door, rubbing her bare arms. The tatty grey string top and equally faded tracksuit bottoms didn’t provide much warmth in her cold apartment.
What?
she demanded, swinging open the door.
Chris, his arm still raised to knock, took her in from head to toe. A poorly masked expression of horror settled on his face. When was the last time you looked in the mirror?
The cheek of him! With a noise of disgust, Diana returned to her comfy spot on the couch. She picked the blanket off the floor and pulled it up to her chest.
Chris shut the door and stopped in front of the sofa. You are a mess.
Aw, thanks,
she said, giving him her best daggers look.
Of course it’s not like he was lying, but still, he could tell a fib and say she looked alright, not her
