About this ebook
This fictionalised memoir unfolds the developing consciousness of a protagonist by conveying, through literary and artistic metaphors and several illustrations, a clash of cultures that she experiences within herself when coming to a new country. Although the story presents events that took place over a particular period of time and setting – that of the mid 1970s in Adelaide-Australia, in what one could term as 'its age of innocence' - it nevertheless reflects a state of mind that any young woman, inexperienced in the ways of an alien world, could have encountered anywhere, and thus the narrative the narrative acquires a universal aura.
Amidst a foreign social setting and period, the evolving picture of the young unnamed woman reveals an unconventional individual, not just because of her peculiar spoken language or notions but also due to her living in an almost hallucinatory cultural atmosphere. Although her experiences are not outstandingly exceptional, yet her interpretation of them - her conflicts and confrontations as well as her particular surroundings - acquire a unique flavour and reveal her to be an uncommon phenomenon, a kind of wild flower in an orderly garden, with whom one gradually comes to empathise and perhaps even to like.
