About this ebook
In 1942 the young soldier Arthur Dodd was taken prisoner by the German Army and transported to Oswiecim in Polish Upper Silesia. The Germans gave it another name, now synonymous with mankind’s darkest hours. They called it Auschwitz.
Forced to do hard labour, starved and savagely beaten, Arthur thought his life would end in Auschwitz. Determined to go down fighting, he sabotaged Nazi industrial work, risked his life to alleviate the suffering of the Jewish prisoners and aided a partisan group planning a mass break-out.
This shocking story sheds new light on the operations at the camp, exposes a hierarchy of prisoner treatment by the SS and presents the largely unknown story of military POWs held there.
Colin Rushton
Born on September 21st, 1939, Colin was educated at Waterloo Grammar School at the northern end of Liverpool during the years 1951 to 1956, going on to gain a degree in Metallurgy. Happily married with two children and two grandchildren, most of his married life has been spent in Cheshire. Colin Rushton is already a published poet, his named poems and the published books or anthologies containing them read as follows: Remembrance - Anchor Poets of the North Grandad's War - On the Funny Side Harry - Between ALaugh and ATear Hell on Earth - Between A Laugh and A Tear Quality Time - Light Of The World Priorities - Echoes Of The Mind Priorities - Days and Dreams Gone By The Remittance Men - The Star-Laden Sky The Magic Of Life - A Quiet Storm The Magic Of Life - Dreams Of Yesterday Hell on Earth - One World Spectator in Hell is Colin's first published book and the Summersdale second and improved edition includes Arthur Dodd returning to Auschwitz with a BBC film crew, the documentary produced havingbeen bought by BBC World Television for coverage around the globe. Colin has recently completed a true First World War story entitled Spirit Of The Trenches. This book, yet unpublished, contains true reflections from combatants in The Great War, personally gleaned from interviews in Britain and Canada some twenty years ago. Its belated completion is due in no small part to the galvanising effect of describing Arthur Dodd's incredible experiences as a Spectator in Hell. Currently, Colin is working on an equally incredible true Holocaust survival story, spanning no less than 5 years 2 months in 9 different camps of the Third Reich's many such institutions. 18 months of this period was spent in the notorious Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp where the subject received Dr. Mengele's permission to live another day, on less than 40 occasions. The amazing story is complemented by numerous German photographs, many of which will, to date, have been unseen by the outside world.
