* Elder Americans were robbed of an estimated $2.9 billion in 2011, up 12 percent from 2008, according to a MetLife Mature Market Institute study.

* Kathleen Quinn, executive director of the National Adult Protective Services Association: Seniors who lose their money are more likely to go into a nursing home, die or go on Medicaid. This is a huge fiscal drain on Medicare and Medicaid. If we can prevent financial abuse or intervene early enough to save the money that remains, then that will save Medicare and especially Medicaid tons of money.

* According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, only one in 14 cases of abuse is actually reported. (2009 statement.)

* Once an older adult has been ripped off, he or she is likely to succumb to other fraudulent financial schemes, according to Prescott Cole, an attorney with the Coalition to End Elder Financial Abuse (CEASE). They will run into more and more of these kinds of scams and they will fall into each and every one of them Cole said.

* National Adult Protective Services Association is an organization representing adult protective service (APS) workers, who are responsible for investigating abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults who are elderly or have disabilities. APS workers will go directly into victim's or potential victims' homes. Kathleen Quinn, executive director of the National Adult Protective Services Association notes.

* In 2010, Investor Protection Trust estimated 7.3 million older adults – 20 percent of older Americans, have been victimized by financial abuse. Most that commit financial elder abuse are people who have already gained their victim’s trust the report notes.

* On average, more women than men are victimized according to the National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA). The typical victim of elder financial abuse is between the ages of 70 and 89, female, frail, Caucasian and at least to a degree, impaired mentally. She is overly trusting of others and may be feel isolated and lonely.

* (A) Research by the University of Iowa found that 35 to 40 percent of community-dwelling older adults performed poorly on measures related to decision-making ability.
