The book starts right after Jace has been bound to Jonathan by Lilith. If one is injured, the other one suffers the same injury. If one is killed, the other will die. Jonathan/Sebastian has devious plans that makes Jace follow along and agree with because he is "Sebastian's Servant" by being bound to him. Clary, Simon, Magnus, Isabelle and Alec don't want to go to the Clave for help because the Clave have put finding Jace as a lower priority and if they do find them, will kill both of Jace and Sebastian. So, Clary does what she always will do and go off and put herself in danger to save Jace without really telling anyone what she is doing.

Everyone else is doing everything they can to save both Clary and Jace. Simon has really grown in this book. He steps up to save Clary and risks his life and the Mark of Cain on his forehead. Alec is so insecure and weak in this book, which kind of surprised me from the earlier books and also really irritated me. I like the Simon/Isabella pairing too. I would recommend this book and I would recommend you read these books back-to-back as they flow one right after the other and it's like reading a VERY big book. Can't wait to start the next book, which will be this weekend!

Another amazing novel in the Immortal Instruments series. Another book that I couldn't put down! The swings and surprises in the story of Clary and Jace is gripping. If you haven't started this series, get the first book and read it now! You will be hooked and you need to read before the movie comes out. It will be good but the books are always better!! Can't wait for the next one!!

Again, I am listening to the series on audiobook and I have been loving all of the books. I highly recommend giving them a chance on audiobook if you have been waiting to start this or looking to re-read this series.I have been wondering how CC was going to keep this going, and was thinking eventually the books would slow down. Just as I thought this, Sebastian happened!! This was again a roller coaster with a ton going on. This story focused on the relationship with Mia and Jordan. I just am not as invested into these characters, and could have done with less of their story. I found myself drifting in the middle of the story, and was happy when it picked back up.I cannot believe I only have one more book to go! I went and ordered both Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows since I have been loving these so much!

Surprisingly, the first half was boring to me. But the ending was very good. I really wanted to give this five stars but that feels like it would be a lie. I also didn't care for the parts with Jordan and Maia

I really enjoyed this one. It had a lot of Isabelle in it which for some reason I appreciated. It felt like I got to know each character on a deeper level in book 5.
Sebastian's character really came to full light which was nice ( in a very terrifying way). There were many twists which kept my attention glued to the story. And last 100 pages I just couldn't put it down.
Im crossing my fingers for a good finale to the series. Because I like MI a lot and would not want it to be spoiled.

Ugh. Really? Ugh. The first few chapter were Jace-less, which significantly improved my ability to tolerate it, but then (of course) Clary has to do a stupid and go after him. Sebastian and Jace are in a total bromance now, which is great, because Sebastian wants to give "the D" to Clary. Yay incestuous love triangles? This series keeps devolving more and more into the lowest dregs of fanfiction.

SPOILERS>>>I started hating this book mid-way as the characters started to act like teenagers in a way they never did in any of the other books. It did not get better. My only hope at the end was that Clary and Jace would break up, but they didn't. Fortunately Magnus left Alec before he could plot to do something even worse to him.

so it appears that my original rating and review has disappeared for some reason, and the same happened for the last book of the series, but i do remember that this was probably my favourite in the entire series. i guess this is my cue to reread it :))

A Very Low 3 Stars. If it wasn't for Simon in all his awesomeness it wouldn't have even gotten 2 stars.

Lots of rambling and possible spoilers ahead:

*ugh* Where do I even start?! This wasn't as terrible as a lot of people say it is...once you sift through the ridiculous amount of Clary whining over Jace. Can I just say that Jace under Sebastathan's control was much more likable than normal Jace?! CC really wrote him as an unlikable character. And it's funny because his love for himself and confidence could be compared with Magnus', but where Magnus is sassy and hilarious, Jace is conceited to the point where he seems like he's truly in love with himself, and it's just U.G.L.Y. (He ain't got no alibi!)

And is it wrong that I LOVE Sebastathan? Where I hated Valentine because he was just a crazy zealot, I love Sebastathan because he's just pure evil. Valentine mistook his crazy self righteousness for pure intentions. Sebastathan knows he's evil and is surprisingly okay with it. Although deep down I think he does wish he was capable of love and being loved--specifically by Jace and Clary. That just may be his downfall. Or maybe not. More than likely Jace and new his heavenly fire along with Clary's blind, dumb luck will be the end for Sebastathan.

And once again Clary races off into danger to save Jace without regard to herself or anyone else. Simon, Alec, Isabelle, and Magnus all risked their lives by summoning a greater demon and an actual angel of the lord, but at least they went in with a plan and they all worked together. Clary sees Jace in trouble and just goes running blindly into the unknown leaving everyone else to (potentially) pick up the pieces if her non-plan is an epic fail. Which it usually is. I get love, love so deep and passionate that you would potentially let the world burn to save your beloved, but that's only in thought not in deed. Once she stopped and thought about what was happening, she realized what a ginormously huge mistake she made by not letting Jace sacrifice himself. Jace knew what the cost of saving himself would be, and he didn't want to pay it. Now Sebastathan is on the loose with an Infernal Cup and revenge on his mind. He will very likely make a huge shadowhunter-hunter army. There will be a huge war and lots of people who didn't have to die, will in fact die. I'll say it again, Clary is selfish and thoughtless. It would have probably broken her to lose Jace, but the world would have kept on turning, Magnus is proof of it. I just feel like her selfishness is constantly rewarded. The amount of angst this couple exudes is just too much. I know it's teenage love, but DAMN!

Isabelle needs to get over herself and tell Simon how she feels. She's the first one to think men should be tripping over themselves for her--that no one is worthy of her greatness, so why would anyone feel like they could truly have her? Why would they express their undying love if they know they're unworthy of her? That they'll just be shot down? She's another one with just a little too much conceit for my taste. I love a strong, confident, badass woman, but there's a thin line between self assurance and narcissism.

And poor, sad, clueless Alec. I feel so, so bad for him. He's never done a relationship--even his familial relationships seem to be seriously lacking in the relationship department. Magnus was one hundred percent right to break-up with him--I sure as hell would have--but I still feel bad for Alec. He doesn't know what to do with these feels he's having, and quite frankly there isn't any one to talk to about them. His parents are useless, his sister is too self involved, Jace and Clary can't see past one another, and he has no other true friends--he'd ever go to Simon. He was scared, and jealous, and confused, but it didn't make what he did right, even if he did realize what a dumb ass he was and decided to do the right thing. It was so wrong to try to make such an enormous decision for Magnus. He should have spoken to Magnus about it; if he had been honest, he would have learned that Magnus was already considering it, and that would have probably been enough to ease his fears. But he didn't talk to the man he supposedly loved and ended up losing him. Poora, poora, pussy cat. (Anyone who gets that reference has my respect as a lover of old school!)

And poor Magnus! How must he feel being betrayed by someone he loves so deeply. He never wanted to, or thought he could be in love with a shadowhunter, but he made an exception for Alec--not that he could have stopped himself from loving him, but he could have stayed away from him. Magnus risked a lot getting involved with a young, inexperienced, closeted, shadowhunter. He risked his heart, his life, and quite frankly his sanity to be with Alec and he was repaid with treachery. And what's worse, he was actually considering giving up his immortality so that he could grow old with Alec. That's like the ultimate slap in the face!

Now with all that being said, Alec didn't mean any harm, and he really had come to his senses before he did anything irreparably stupid. I truly hope Magnus doesn't take too long to realize this and they get back together. But I'm sure the road to a Malec reunion will be long and full of *shudder* angst. I never knew there could be too much teenage angst in an YA series and yet we have this series. I'm committed now; five books deep, there's no turning back. There had just better be an epic reunion of Alec and Magnus in the next book...and less Clace wangst!

This is the fifth YA novel in the Mortal Instrument series. The greater demon Lilith has been "killed" and returned to Hell but Jace is now missing, last seen with the resurrected son of Valentine, Sebastian. Jace and Sebastian have been bound; Jace being subservient to Sebastian and any attempt to kill Sebastian will result in the death of Jace. Sebastian is now plotting to raise a race of dark Shadowhunters through the aid of Lilith's blood. Clary and the others spend much of the remainder of the book trying to find a weapon that will kill Sebastian without hurting Jace. I enjoyed this novel; however, the adolescent ardor was a bit too much to bear. However, I must remember that this novel was written for teenagers; not a middle-age man.

The story continues to unfold, but the slowness of the going is growing painful. Perhaps my tolerance for teen angst and pent up sexual frustrations is finally fading in my advancing age. Perhaps I am just ready to know how this story ends already. Being on book 6.

Another whirlwind run through this world, fast and heavy-hearted for our bunch. From trial to trial, from lesson to lesson, from hard chances and choices each time. I loved how twisted it go. I love that we got to be more in Simon's head after all he's been through, same with the werewolves.

I am not sure how I felt about the whole Jace part (which, yes, is the whole lean over from the end of the last book), but I'm very curious to see how the end result of that (the climax of this one), plays on in book 6.

I felt so bad For Alec it wasn't fair! he just considered the offer its not as if he could've said "Hey Magnus I'm just considering to shorten your life hope you don't mind !! *gay kisses* muah! I Love you " Magnus should broaden his Horizons
and Amatis ? Ugh not her! she didn't deserve this.

This was okay, but I can't help but be a little disappointed to be honest. It had definite middle book feel to it, and perhaps it was the lack of 'real' Jace, or Clary regressing to annoying Clary, or just everything, but I just didn't feel engaged at all. I was most excited about the various mentions of Will in it, to be honest (which were welcome, and without doubt the best part of the book. The excitement when Jace read from Will's copy of A Tale of Two Cities is indescribable.)

Isabelle was by far the best character in the book and continues to be everything I wish that the rest of Cassandra Clare's female characters would be. Maia and Jordan were wonderful and Magnus was Magnus, and therefore perfect. Apart from that though...Clary was irritating to the extreme, we only had two scenes with real Jace, Alec was an immature, irritant for the most part (which breaks my heart - I was actually glad Magnus broke up with him), Simon really doesn't deserve Izzy (although the Star Wars scene was perfect) and all in all, it was just too...easy. I'm hoping for more with COHF, because at the moment, I kinda fear that the whole thing has lost its spark.

My. God. Cassandra Clare. I cannot comprehend her brilliance. She is flawless. She's beyond flawless. This book was everything I wanted and more. A lot more. Too much so. My heart is in pieces. My God. This book though. I can't even. God. I'm obsessed. I'm hooked. I'm screwed because the next book doesn't come out for forever. BUT THEN IT'S THE LAST ONE. I don't want it to end. I think I've grown more attached to the characters in this series than I ever have in any other book/book series in the history of my life. AND THAT'S SAYING SOMETHING.

I am really enjoying this series and I really like Clare's writing style. This continues on where "City of Fallen Angels" concluded - with Jace and Sebastian bound and thus Clary once against separated. TBH, the whole Jace/Clary relationship is tedious and I am weary of it - I wish she would just let those two be together and move on to someone else - or, as Clary's mother put it - maybe they should not be together at all? Anyhow, it's all a bit over time top at times. I found the side plots far more interesting - I'm a little in love with Magnus and, possibly because, I consider Alec a jealous and somewhat unappealing character, it was interesting watching things sour between them. Isabelle is growing on me, with her forthright, downright abrupt manner and I loved the role she took on in this book. The rekindling of friendship between Jordan and Maia was cute. And, well, I know he's not a particularly popular character, but Simon has to be one of my favourites. I feel Clare portrays the sort of geekier type of guy pretty well, and whilst Shadowhunters may have the sexy and dangerous vibe, I'd rather have someone that made me laugh and I felt comfortable with.

Overall, the plot itself was okay, a bit tedious at times with all the backing-and-forthing of idea, but the actual climax was pretty dramatic and I love how the cast seem to live and breathe (except Simon cos he's a vampire) on the pages. This series is still one of my top recommended teenage reads and I shall continue to savour each volume.

    My Opinion :

I have been a fateful fan of Cassandra Clare since the first time I read City of Bones, a book I wasn't sure I would like. But I LOVED it. And my love for miss Clare hasn't died out. No; it has grown bigger. Even bigger with City of Lost Souls.

City of Lost Souls was filled with surprising twists that made me gasp.

City of Lost Souls is just after City of Fallen Angel's ending (which was a frigging huge cliffhanger!) and, let me tell you, when you start City of Lost Souls, even if you had forgotten everything that had happened in City of Fallen Angels, everything just FLOWS back to your mind.

As always, Cassandra Clare's writing pulls you in, and doesn't let you go away easily!

Jace really scared me in some parts of the book, and I was so utterly confused about what was going on with him. I wondered if he had really changed sides.

Clary, fortunately, has gained a lot of maturity throughout all the series. I thought she was at her best in City of Glass, but in City of Lost Souls she was almost as great a character as she was in the third book.

I cannot wait to read the next installment in this thrilling series!

This was absolutely my favorite of the series. The character development was so much better, and it was so much less predictable. It had a much darker feel to it than the previous books and it had a really interesting plot line. I still have problems with Jace and Clary as a couple and I think that there was a story line gone wrong with Magnus and Alec. I hope that in the sequel series they address Alec giving away his memory and then miraculously getting it back.

Oh my god, what a ride. I have two opinions of this book, I loved the majority of it but the other parts just gave me anxiety, I could not put this book down for another day without finding out how it ends. Well, if he felt it, why didn't he do anything? Grrr!!! Stupid Magnus!

    Merged review:

Okay, so I just finished this book a couple of days ago, and I'm glad I didn't write the review right away, because it might've come out a bit biased (as in, I loved the other 4 books, so by association I loved this one too). Truth is, I so loved the other four books in this series, that I was totally inclined to like this one too. And I did like it, but not as much as the rest of them. Bear with me and I'll tell you why.

So we all know how City of Fallen Angels ended, and what a killer the cliff hanger was. Jace and Sebastian missing, lots of blood splattered on the floor, etc. etc. I could say that it alone made me wait for City of Lost Souls with anticipation. But when I opened CoLS, guess what happened... I found myself submerged into Simon, Izzy, Malec, Jordan and Maya and some Clary. And no Jace. And no Seb. And grrr!!!! That was so totally disappointing. Sure, they were all playing some role in the story, but I missed Jace!!!

I was really frustrated that from mostly a Jace/Clary story, it was twisted into a Jordan/Maia story, Simon/Izzy story and Magnus/Alec story. I mean, don't get me wrong - I think they are all awesome characters, and I was glad that the relationships between them are developing, but are they supposed to be what we should focus on? I thought it was a bit too much.

I think we were supposed to get to hate Simon's mother even more in this book, though if you ask me, she had all the right to be frightened and freaked out. Her son had turned into a vamp for God's sake! Honestly, wouldn't you freak out? I know I would. Sure, she sort of overdid it, but heck, I understand her! What I don't understand was Becky's (Simon's sister) reaction... I mean, seriously? If you learned your brother had turned into a vamp, would you just say "Umm, okay. I get you're a vamp now. But I still love you. Come, give me a hug." I don't think so. No. It's too unrealistic, especially since Becky has no clue there are real monsters out there. So darn, the realistic reaction would be to run the heck away! Perhaps in a day or two, when she got her wits about, she could brave meeting Simon again. Now THAT would be pretty realistic to me...

Then there was Alec with his insecurities in Magnus. Yeah, I understand him pretty well. If your boyfriend was an immortal, wouldn't you want to be one too, to be together forever or something? Or if that's impossible, wouldn't you want to turn him into a mortal instead? I honestly don't know because of two reasons: 1st - forever is quite a long time, and what if a year or two from now you realize you don't feel the same about that person anymore? So what, you're stuck living forever now? And 2nd - you can't just take somebody's free will away just like that! For your own purposes, and because you couldn't handle a little emotional hardship! It's just silly, and it's enough to break even the strongest relationship. I was just totally disappointed in Alec because he even had the will to consider these options.

And Magnus? Boy, couldn't he tell that something was going on in Alec's mind? I mean, if they were indeed THAT CLOSE, he should've noticed and done something about it, no? So his behavior frustrated me pretty bad. I expected him to be proactive, sensitive and all that, but instead, he just turned into an insensitive bastard and slammed the door on Alec. If that wasn't stupid I don't know what was.

Yet, even with all that, Alec was somehow prone to being insecure. He sort of had it in him. But I would've never expected it of easy going, confident Izabelle, who never gave off the vibe of an insecure girl. And now she just started to show a side of her that must've been buried so deep down inside, that I honestly never saw it coming. And she's insecure about Simon of all people!! Because of... Jace-struck Clary!!! That's so unbelievable, I can't even now wrap my mind around the concept. Sure, feeling a little unstable is understandable. After all she's lost her little brother, and now Jace is missing too, but Izzy's always been able to hold herself together. Why on earth would she feel insecure about Simon?

Then there came Jordan and Maia, who I was totally surprised to see so much of in this book. Perhaps Ms. Clare was trying to fill in the pages.. I honestly don't know, but I think she sort of overdid it with including those two in the mainframe of the story. Yeah, I sure enjoyed their hot passionate relationship, but I didn't think that was necessary to be included in the book. Perhaps an extra would've been a better choice..?

Aaand now onto the characters which should've remained as the main ones but didn't quite make it there...

Clary, and perhaps she's the only character who felt realistic to me throughout the novel, has grown into a brave girl ready to do whatever it takes to save the one she loves. She's not the girl we used to know in City of Bones. No, she's decisive, strong, a bit reckless, and infuriatingly good at kicking monster butt. I loved how she considered the consequences of her actions, I loved how she seemed to think things through at the right moment. How she was able to make traps for Sebastian. And I loved how she made the right decision in the end. Can't tell you what that was, but it was incredibly swift and smooth and she deserves applause for building up the nerve to do it.

Jace, oh Jace! I missed him so much, I can't even describe the feeling! Sure, his body made an appearance from a certain point onward, but it wasn't Jace in there, not really. It was a person totally controlled by Sebastian. What confused me was that this Jace also seemed to love and want Clary. How did that happen? Then our Jace was back for a little, and I was so glad to see him even for a little while. My heart broke for him, and I ached to comfort him somehow. I could understand his dilemma, his pain and even his decision, even though just the thought of it tore my heart apart to pieces.

And Sebastian... the bastard! I was halfway convinced that he had something good in mind this time, but heck - I should've known better! Nothing good comes out of a bad tree, does it? The Bible says so, and we can see the same principle applied here. But he was so darn convincing, saving Clary from those demons and all... Then again, he did try to seduce her, and killed a bunch of people, and then did all those horrible things to Luke's sister, Amatis. I was just totally grossed out by him in the end. So no, he won't turn good, like ever.

On the story in general, I have the following thoughts: I hoped that the reason behind Sebastian's craziness would be something more intriguing. But in the end it didn't turn out all that great. It almost felt like Ms. Clare was running out of plot ideas, so she decided to wrap up Seb and Jace in this weird plan to ... well I won't tell you more.

So, you might think that with all I've said, I wouldn't recommend this book, but that's not true. I totally recommend it, because my opinion is just this. My opinion. Yours might be totally different. So yeah, you gotta try it for yourself! ;)

I'm not much of a critic when it comes to Clary and Jace... I fell hook, line, and sinker for this world when I read the first book. This one was a great adventure - as they all have been... I was a little sad at a couple of the storyline resolutions (or lack thereof...) But reading is an escape, and this fit the bill!

I am loving this series with its multitude of quirky and paranormal characters! Still, I have to say, does Jace have to suffer some sort of personality change/possession/blinding with an evil person in every book? I'm really hoping he stays normal Jace in the next book, because his ever changing personality and loyalties (though he always comes back to the right side in the end) are getting a little tiresome. Nevertheless, this book is well worth reading. I enjoy Simon, Isabelle, Maia, Jordan, Magnus, and Alec just as much (if not more!) than Jace and Clary. Fun reading!

Ugh! The way this one ends! March is going to take forever to get here! I can't wait to read the next one! In my opinion, each novel in this series was even better than the last. There is always a new twist to the series. The most imaginative series I have read yet. This may just be my favorite YA series to date.
