Starbright (The Starlight Trilogy Book #2) - Alexandra Richland

    Chapter One

Elizabeth Sutton wiped her hands on her apron and opened the oven door to check on the Thanksgiving turkey. The squash, green beans, stuffing, and potatoes sat on the stovetop on low heat. Her homemade apple pie was in the icebox.

Beth and her roommate Olivia Weston had invited their friends, actress Constance Murphy and her famous crooning beau, Matthew McKenna, over for dinner. They also expected their respective beaux, Aidan Evans and Nathan Taggart.

It had been over three weeks since Beth saw Aidan and she wanted to welcome him back to Los Angeles with a home-cooked meal and an evening of relaxation and good conversation. Aidan told her how much he loved apple pie on Halloween, so she baked one for dessert tonight. She didn’t expect it to compete with his memory of his mother’s apple pie but hoped he would still enjoy it.

While Aidan stayed at director Elia Kazan’s Connecticut home to work on the preproduction details for their upcoming boxing drama, Golden Gloves, he called Beth every evening. Aidan was close to Kazan, often referring to him by his nickname, Gadg, and trusted him to keep their relationship a secret.

During their telephone conversations, they spoke about how they spent their days, their respective film projects, and how much they missed each other. Beth’s musical, Venus Rising, kept her busy and fatigued her, but her excitement over talking to Aidan when she returned home gave her the energy to make it through each day.

When prompted, Aidan confessed his nightmares persisted, but less frequently and intensely than they did before he left L.A. Beth’s concern over his well-being didn’t dissipate. She would not feel at ease until she saw him today and could compare his present condition to how he looked on Halloween.

To occupy his days while Kazan filmed another project in Hoboken, Aidan took walks through the Connecticut countryside, read, and listened to music. Molly Kazan, the director’s wife, also kept him company until the children came home from school. Molly was a brilliant writer and often engaged him in discussions about the latest books or Broadway plays, which he found intellectually stimulating.

Aidan also enjoyed playing board games with the Kazans’ eldest boy and watching the other children color or play outside. Although the family’s activities were nothing extraordinary, they provided him with the opportunity to experience what a normal childhood would’ve been like had his mother not been murdered and if he hadn’t grown estranged from his father. He was very grateful for Mr. and Mrs. Kazan’s hospitality and spoke of paying them back, though they continually refused compensation, insisting his enjoyable company was enough.

Aidan’s greatest joy came from completing his daily Method acting exercises and going over the Golden Gloves script with Kazan in the evenings. The film was about a young man, Joe Oliver, who at eighteen years old was one of the top middleweight boxers in America. After he accidently killed his opponent in the ring, he was devastated and quit the sport. The film took place five years later, chronicling Joe’s return to the profession and his endeavor to earn a championship title.

It was a heartwarming, multi-layered story about redemption and triumph, and Beth was as excited about it as Aidan was. As of yet, no other casting decisions had been made. The only confirmations so far were that Luther Mertz, the founder and head of Starlight Studios, agreed to fund the picture, and it would be filmed in Los Angeles on studio grounds starting in mid-January.

Beth hoped her next project would be filmed on the studio lot, too, so she could see Aidan more often. The only downside was they were forced to keep their relationship a secret from anyone but their close friends. Mr. Mertz loathed Aidan, despite all the money he made for the studio with his film, Spike Rollins. He would never approve of a relationship between them.

Beth turned off the oven and removed her apron. Liv, can you bring the placemats and silverware to the table, please? I’ll put the glasses and china out in a minute.

Olivia entered the kitchen with a broad smile on her face. Sure thing!

She picked up the items from the counter and whisked them into the living room.

Beth was glad Olivia’s mood had improved since Connie’s Halloween party. Whatever had bothered Nathan seemed to pass, and their relationship was finally back to normal. Olivia even spent the night at his L.A. home a few times after Beth insisted she didn’t mind staying alone overnight in their apartment.

Beth and Olivia had never entertained in their apartment before and looked forward to tonight’s dinner party. They bought an oak table, matching chairs, silver cutlery, crystal, and china to create a dining area in their living room to make up for their lack of a formal space.

There was no hope in trying to impress Matthew and Connie because their homes were much more elegant, but the least Beth and Olivia could do was make the apartment neat and tidy and provide their guests with a proper dinner table.

With their guests arriving soon, Beth placed her apron under the sink and set the new china and glassware on the table. Her next stop was her bedroom to change into her evening attire. She’d been working on dinner since early that morning and had a lot of work to do to look her best for Aidan tonight.

After touching up her makeup and brushing her curled hair, she assessed her navy blue cocktail dress in the mirror. It had a fitted bodice, wrapped bust, tie shoulders, a full skirt—thanks to the petticoat underneath—and fell to mid-calf. She completed her look with a pearl necklace and earrings. She usually didn’t wear low-cut styles, but this dress, although more daring than her usual attire, still respectably concealed her bust without looking too prudish. As a woman with a beau now, it was time to dress more maturely.

Beth dabbed vanilla perfume on her wrists and behind her ears, swapped her slippers for navy blue pumps, and then ventured into Olivia’s bedroom. Her friend sat at the vanity applying lipstick. Her black hair was styled in its usual pixie cut, and she wore a dark red, keyhole halter sundress that accentuated her petite figure and complemented her creamy complexion and round gray eyes. The ruby bracelet Nathan recently bought her sparkled on her right wrist.

Olivia turned away from the mirror. Gosh, Beth. You look incredible! Aidan’s not going to be able to keep his eyes off you tonight.

Thank you. A blush crept into her cheeks. I’m nervous. It feels like ages since I last saw him.

Olivia smiled. Everything will be fine.

A knock at the front door sent them racing from the bedroom. Olivia got to the door first and opened it. Beth ensured her smile didn’t falter when Connie and Matthew were revealed as their first guests, not Aidan. Simultaneously, she was relieved she still had a few more minutes to prepare for their reunion.

Welcome! Olivia ushered the couple inside.

Connie embraced Olivia. Thank you again for inviting us. She moved on to Beth. We’ve been looking forward to this dinner all week.

Good evening, ladies. Matthew kissed their cheeks. The two of you look ravishing.

Beth and Olivia accepted his compliment and thanked them both for coming.

Connie unfastened her hat from her curled blond hair and removed what Beth assumed was a mink coat. It was an interesting choice for a quaint November dinner party in Los Angeles, but she wasn’t surprised. Connie always dressed elegantly. In fact, Beth couldn’t help but notice the contrast between Connie’s pink silk taffeta evening gown, white gloves, and high heels, and the apartment’s dowdy decor. As Connie surveyed her surroundings, however, Beth didn’t catch any indication she was unimpressed or disappointed.

Olivia hung Connie’s items in the closet while Beth took Matthew’s coat and fedora. As usual, he was impeccably dressed in a black suit and tie. His brown hair was styled with what she distinctly identified as lemon-scented hair tonic, and his grin looked gregarious as ever.

So these are your digs, huh? He peered into the kitchen. Very nice.

Beth smiled. He was just being polite, but she appreciated his effort.

Thank you. She gestured to the sofas in the living room. Please have a seat. Would you like a beer? Soda? Some wine, perhaps?

She was grateful Olivia suggested they have a variety of drinks on hand to cater to everyone’s preferences. It helped that the legal drinking age didn’t seem to apply to famous studio employees and she was able to purchase alcohol without difficulty.

A beer would be great. With his grin intact, Matthew made his way into the living room and sat down.

As Olivia shut the door, Beth went into the kitchen to fetch his beverage. If she hadn’t seen Aidan drinking beer straight out of the bottle at Art’s Bar in New York, she would’ve poured it into a glass before she gave it to him. It was just as well because she had forgotten to buy beer mugs while out shopping.

Upon her entry into the living room, Matthew grinned from the sofa. Thanks, Beth. He took the bottle and raised it to his lips.

Would you like me to turn on the television? she asked. We just bought it last week.

Sure. Matthew leaned back in his seat, looking relaxed, which made her feel more at ease, too.

Beth walked to the television and switched it on. As she adjusted the antenna and turned the dial, she was unsure on which of the three channels to settle.

How about this one? she said, stopping on a new comedic program. The credits scrolled across the screen, indicating it was just beginning.

Matthew crossed his legs, knee to ankle. Yeah, keep it here. Danny Durant is a riot!

With his eyes fixed on the television, he brought the bottle to his lips again and chuckled at the opening scene as he took another sip. Relieved that the program was to his liking, Beth joined Olivia and Connie in the kitchen. It was only a galley kitchen, but there was space for the three of them to stand comfortably near the icebox.

It’s been such a long time since I’ve done anything like this for the holidays, Connie said. Thank you both for your efforts. I know a lot of planning went into tonight’s party.

Beth was about to reply when there was a knock at the door. She froze.

Olivia placed a hand on her forearm and smiled. Would you like me to get it?

Beth swallowed hard and offered a matching smile. I’ll go with you.

This time, it was Nathan at the door. He entered the foyer with his fedora in hand, his blue eyes brightening when they landed on Olivia. As the executive assistant to Mr. Mertz, Nathan was the only one who had to work today. Though, dressed in a charcoal gray suit with his blond hair freshly coiffed, he looked polished and well rested.

Beth took his hat and placed it in the closet.

Sorry I’m late. Nathan shut the door and kissed Olivia on the lips. Work was busy.

Olivia gazed at him adoringly. All that matters is you’re here now.

Nathan gave Beth a kiss on the cheek, followed by Connie, who emerged from the kitchen to welcome him. Always a gentleman, he also complimented all three women on their appearances.

Now everyone was accounted for except Aidan. Beth hadn’t heard from him all day, but he’d told her over the telephone yesterday that he had an appointment scheduled immediately upon his arrival in L.A. That could account for his delay, or perhaps his flight had landed later than expected.

Matthew stood and greeted Nathan with a vigorous handshake.

Hey, Nate. Have you seen this show? He gestured to the television. It’s hilarious.

No, I haven’t. I’ve been meaning to catch an episode, though.

Olivia left for the kitchen, citing she already knew what Nathan would like to drink. He and Matthew continued their conversation.

I guess we’re just waiting on one more, Olivia said upon her return.

All eyes focused on Beth. She blushed.

The day after the Halloween party, Connie invited her and Olivia out to lunch at the Chateau Marmont and she was questioned relentlessly about Aidan. She didn’t go into detail regarding what happened on Mulholland Drive, but she shared that their relationship had progressed beyond friendship.

Beth believed Nathan had a hand in keeping her departure from the party with Aidan from entering the gossip mill, and most importantly, from Mr. Mertz. It also helped that Aidan wasn’t around in the weeks following Halloween and she’d been seen out socially on numerous occasions without him.

With the men settled in front of the television with their drinks, the women returned to the kitchen.

Connie leaned against the counter. Aidan is running late, I see.

Beth came to his defense immediately. He had an appointment this afternoon. It probably lasted longer than he anticipated.

Olivia rolled her eyes. Come on, Connie. Give the fella a break.

Connie flashed an amused smile. I was just making a statement, ladies. There’s no need to get testy.

Matthew and Nathan burst into laughter in the next room, but they weren’t loud enough to drown out the three solid knocks on the front door. With the confirmation that she would finally be reunited with Aidan, Beth’s heart launched into an anxious beat that undermined her confidence. Suddenly, everything she did in preparation for today seemed insufficient.

Olivia gave her a slight push. Go on, silly. Greet your beau.

Beth shook so badly she didn’t know how she made it to the foyer without tripping. She took a deep breath before opening the door, not knowing what to expect but hoping for the best.

The Aidan that greeted her on the other side, holding a large bouquet of red roses and wearing an ivory cable knit sweater with a shawl collar and dark gray dress pants, looked like a new person. He was back to an acceptable weight for a man his height and stature, and the extra pounds seemed attributable to the additional lean muscle that filled out his chest and shoulders.

His face still looked chiseled like the male models Beth often saw in magazine advertisements and billboards, and he had shaved for the occasion. His emerald eyes, framed by long, dark lashes, entranced her as when they first met, and his brown hair, rich with caramel hues, sat atop his head in its typical sleep-tossed style.

Judging from the faded dark circles under his eyes, it looked like he had actually gotten rest over the previous three weeks. Most captivating was the smoldering flash in his eyes as he perused her unhurriedly from top to bottom.

At the realization she had yet to say a word to him, Beth stopped gawking and managed a sheepish smile.

Hello and welcome. She cringed inwardly at her address, which was better suited for a restaurant hostess than a woman greeting her beau.

If Aidan minded her awkward manners, he didn’t show it. I’m really sorry I’m late. He extended the roses to her. These are for you.

Appreciation painted Beth’s cheeks, rivaling the color of the flowers she took from him. She brought the blooms to her nose. They’re lovely. Thank you.

A dazzling grin stretched across Aidan’s face. You’re welcome.

Beth gestured for him to come inside. Please make yourself at home.

As he entered the apartment, his fingers met hers and he leaned in, brushing his lips to her ear.

You look beautiful. A kiss to her cheek followed his husky compliment.

Warmth spawned pleasurably deep inside her, accompanied by the tingling sensations that always flourished like wildfire across her skin whenever they were together; sensations that were thrilling and, up until she met him, completely foreign to her.

This time, Beth felt a yearning for more than just his kisses. She wanted to feel his hands on her where no man had ever been, kneading her flesh and—

    Aidan, you made it!

Beth jumped at Olivia’s enthusiastic greeting. She exhaled a deep breath and faced the room, embarrassed she’d forgotten about her friends. She placed her hand over her thundering heart, hoping they couldn’t see how greatly her beau affected her.

Olivia enveloped Aidan in a hug, as if they’d known each other for years. She mentioned in an earlier conversation that they spoke briefly at Connie’s Halloween party. Beth was glad they were getting along well.

Aidan chuckled and returned her embrace. Nice to see you, too.

Olivia stepped back. You’ve been shopping at Wesley’s. Very nice.

Aidan shifted his attention to Beth. As she took another good look at him, all she could think was that nice didn’t even come close to describing him.

Come now, Liv, she said with a nervous giggle. Aidan didn’t come here to get his wardrobe assessed.

Nathan and Matthew made their way over to shake Aidan’s hand. Connie lingered in the kitchen doorway.

Aidan, you’re making the rest of us men look bad, Matthew joked, pointing to Beth’s flowers.

Olivia feigned a pout and looked at Nathan. Dear, why didn’t you bring me flowers?

Nathan chuckled. Yeah, thanks, Aidan. You’re a real pal.

Everyone joined in his laughter except Connie. Matthew tugged on her elbow, guiding her toward the group. She regarded her beau in annoyance and yanked out of his grip.

As she approached Aidan and extended her hand, she didn’t even pretend to be glad to see him. Good evening.

Aidan looked down at her hand suspended between them for a moment before shaking it. Good evening, Constance.

She lifted her eyebrows, appearing surprised by his manners. You can address me as Connie, if you’d like. She sounded slightly more pleasant this time.

See, honey? Matthew draped his arm around her shoulders. He isn’t so bad.

Connie shot her beau a threatening glance.

Instead of looking offended, Aidan slipped his hands into his pockets and smirked. Beth wanted to give him a big kiss for his efforts. She was thankful he was taking the high road and not stooping to her friend’s level.

Beth motioned to the dining table. Please, everyone, have a seat. I’ll put my flowers in water and then start bringing out the food.

Do you need help? Aidan asked.

It wasn’t the man’s job to assist with such things, but Beth was grateful for the offer.

Olivia and I will take care of it, she said, unable to conceal her giddy smile. Please relax. You must be tired from your travels.

After turning off the television, Beth joined Olivia in the kitchen and put her roses in water. When all the food and drinks were on the table, Aidan pulled out her chair and helped her get settled. She placed her napkin in her lap as he took his seat next to her.

The attentive look he gave her made it difficult to concentrate, especially since his eyes seemed to reflect the same desire she felt toward him. She longed for alone time with him but felt nervous about what the opportunity would mean since she had never been romantically involved with a man before.

Nathan cut the turkey as Olivia and Beth dished out the trimmings. The compliments flowed immediately. Beth was proud she was able to display her domestic talents. In her opinion, they were important for women to possess, whether they were homemakers or had professional careers.

Aidan, how was your trip? Nathan shoved a forkful of turkey into his mouth.

Aidan swallowed his food before speaking. It was good. Gadg and I went over Shultz’s script in detail and made a few changes. We also got Rocky Marcello on board to train me.

Marcello! Matthew set down his wine glass. He’s the world middleweight champion. Man, you’re lucky.

Beth kept her focus on Aidan, anxious to learn more about the film, aside from what he’d already shared with her.

Rocky’s an important part of the process, he replied. I want it to look authentic when I shoot the boxing scenes.

"I haven’t seen Luther so interested in a film since Spike Rollins, Nathan remarked. He predicts a major hit with Golden Gloves."

It’s a great script. The only drawback for me is that Mertz is funding it. Aidan tossed Beth a tender look. The touch of his hand to her knee beneath the table was unexpected, but welcome. But it’s worth it if it means I’ll be filming on the studio lot.

Beth sucked in a breath as Aidan’s fingers slid up her leg and found her hand resting on her thigh. She was grateful she was sitting down; with the way her head spun and her limbs wilted, she would’ve collapsed upon first contact.

With a slow exhale, she closed her eyes. It seemed Aidan wasn’t the only one who had changed over the last three weeks. She didn’t know where her erotic thoughts about him came from. She wasn’t quite sure how to manage them, either.

Beth, Nathan was speaking to you.

At the sound of Olivia’s voice, Beth opened her eyes and switched focus to Nathan sitting across from her. To add to her humiliation, everyone at the table seemed aware of the source of her absentmindedness. I’m sorry. What did you say?

Nathan grinned. "Just that you must be excited to move on from Venus Rising."

Beth felt Aidan’s eyes burning into her and was still acutely aware of his hand resting with hers on her mid-thigh.

It’s been a challenging experience, and I’m grateful for it, she replied in a surprisingly steady voice. But I can’t wait to receive my next film assignment. Hopefully it’ll be shot at the studio. She gave Aidan a coy look. That is, if Mr. Mertz extends my contract.

Don’t worry. You’ll get the extension, Nathan said. Luther likes your work.

"Sparkling Meadow was excellent, Beth, Connie added. You’re a shoo-in."

She smiled. Thank you. I hope so.

Liv, have you spoken to Beth about the house you want to show her? Nathan asked.

Oh, I forgot! Olivia dropped her knife and fork with a clatter. I took a walk the other day and found this spectacular home for sale on Grayson Avenue. Two bedrooms, one bathroom. It’s a real gem.

My probation period doesn’t end for another two weeks, Beth reminded her. When we initially spoke about moving, we said we wouldn’t buy anything until I knew for sure that Mr. Mertz wanted to keep me on at the studio.

Like Nathan and Connie said, you’re guaranteed to get a contract extension. The look that settled on Olivia’s face indicated she wasn’t about to let the conversation end until she got her wat. Let’s at least take a look at it this weekend.

Beth smiled. I suppose there’s no harm in that.

I can come as well to ensure you two won’t get taken advantage of in the deal, Nathan said. If you like the house, I’ll call Saul Stern and we can negotiate a purchase agreement on your behalf.

    Olivia looked positively giddy. Perfect!

Buying a home is a good idea, Aidan interjected. I actually bought a house this afternoon since I figure I’ll be in L.A. a while longer.

Beth perked up at this information. That’s wonderful. Where is it?

Sixty Mortimer Drive. Gadg’s friend owned it. I went there straight from the airport, liked what I saw, and signed the necessary papers.

Beth did her best to rein in her excitement. Aidan’s new house wasn’t just nearby, it was very close. And if she and Olivia purchased the place that was just mentioned, they would live even closer to each other.

    Does Saul know? Nathan inquired.

Aidan chuckled. He will when he picks up his messages at the office tomorrow.

Nathan laughed and shook his head. Why did I set you up with him if you aren’t going to use his services?

Real estate in L.A. is a good investment. Matthew lifted a hefty helping of green beans to his mouth. I’m sure Saul won’t mind.

It’s not like it’ll put me in the red, Aidan said. "I’ll have more than enough to purchase the new place and continue paying rent for my New York apartment once the bank opens tomorrow and my Golden Gloves advance clears."

Connie’s utensils clattered to her plate, catching the attention of everyone at the table. You’re getting an advance? Mr. Mertz never does that.

Beth was surprised by the news, too, but she also knew Aidan’s talents were worth such distinction.

He shrugged in complete disregard. I’ve gotten an advance for both of my films.

If Connie’s jaw dropped any further, her chin would touch the table. Both films?

It’s rare for the studio to sanction advances, but Aidan’s the hottest actor right now, Nathan explained. He said he wouldn’t do the film without an advance, and Elia Kazan said he wouldn’t do the film without Aidan. Since Kazan and Bud Shultz own the rights to the screenplay and Luther wants to make the picture so badly, he had no choice but to agree.

I see. Connie glared at Aidan.

Tensions at the table escalated as he continued eating without paying her any bother.

Beth swooped in to add some levity. When do you move in, Aidan?

He picked up a healthy serving of potatoes with his fork. It’s already empty ’cause the producer I bought it from is based out of New York and hasn’t used it in ages. So I’m thinking I should be settled in by next week. I told the landlord of my current place I’d pay rent until he finds another tenant.

If you want help moving, give me a call, Nathan said.

Me, too, Matthew chimed in. I’m sure you could use my herculean strength. He flexed his biceps and everyone at the table laughed, apart from Connie. Again.

Beth was grateful when Matthew changed the subject.

So, Aidan, Nathan and I have decided to attend your race in December.

You’re attending what? Olivia’s eyes darted between the men.

Aidan entered a car race in Santa Barbara, and Nate and I are going, Matthew replied. It takes place on a Saturday, which works with our schedules. We can use one of RCA Victor’s private planes to get there. That way Nate doesn’t have to go through Luther to get a studio plane.

Olivia bounced in her seat like an overzealous toddler.

I want to go, too. She clasped her hands and looked at her beau. Nathan, may I go?

I don’t see why not. Nathan’s eyes shifted to Aidan. Is that okay with you?

He nodded. Sure, I don’t mind.

Olivia met Beth’s gaze across the table. You have to come as well.

Beth took a moment to mull over the offer. Aidan seemed like a competent driver, but she was still as worried for him as she’d been when he first told her that racing was a possibility. Seeing the race firsthand would most likely add to her anxiousness. She wouldn’t share her true feelings with him, though, and risk raining on his parade.

Are you sure you don’t mind? she said. I wouldn’t want to intrude.

Of course not. Aidan gave her hand a squeeze under the table. The only reason I didn’t ask you before is because I didn’t think racing interested you.

It’s not that I’m uninterested in car racing. I just don’t know anything about it. Beth squeezed his hand back. I want to learn, though, since it’s something you’re passionate about.

Aidan’s eyes crinkled with his megawatt grin. The race starts at four o’clock. I’m driving up there the day before with a mechanic I met a few months ago at Competition Motors when I was getting my motorcycle tuned up. He said he’d help me with modifications and stuff like that. He’s also gonna pit for me during the race. Plus, I need to sign in and log some final practice hours. You’re not working, right?

Beth smiled over how easily their plans were falling into place. "The remainder of my Venus Rising schedule doesn’t include weekends, so it won’t be a problem for me to attend."

Oh, goody! Olivia clapped her hands. But we shouldn’t fly. I think a road trip is in order.

A proud grin overtook Nathan’s face. Good idea, love.

Well, you five have fun, Connie muttered over the rim of her wine glass. She took a sip and placed the glass next to her plate, avoiding eye contact with everyone at the table.

Matthew frowned. Come on, honey. You have to come. There’s no way I could enjoy the race without you.

Connie rolled her eyes. Oh, please. You were going without me a few minutes ago.

Yes, but that’s before I knew Olivia and Beth were coming along. I thought it was a guys-only trip. Now I realize my mistake. As Matthew gave Connie the twenty-two-year-old man’s equivalent of puppy dog eyes, Beth had no idea how her friend could say no to him.

Connie shrugged. I don’t like car races, and I don’t like dust and dirt.

Matthew leaned into her ear. We can stay at the Fisco Gardens Hotel. You remember that place. Don’t you, baby? His velvety voice suggested the hotel held fond memories for the couple of the intimate variety.

Connie’s blush confirmed Beth’s hunch. Well, I suppose I could try to make room in my schedule. She attempted to act nonchalant, but Beth could tell she’d already made up her mind to attend the race.

It was clear Matthew knew this, too, when he pulled Connie in for a sideways hug and kissed her cheek, nearly spilling her wine in the process. Based on her flirty smile, she didn’t mind one bit.

So Aidan will check into one room on Friday, Olivia said. Beth, Connie, and I will check into another room on Saturday, and Nathan and Matthew will check into a third room. You know, to keep up appearances since none of us are married. Then after the race on Saturday, we’ll sneak into our proper rooms. Her eyes brightened. It’ll work out perfectly.

Beth blanched. They would be staying overnight in Santa Barbara. As couples.

Olivia’s eyes skipped to hers, widening with recognition of her apprehension. Um, Beth, isn’t it time for us to heat the pie?

Beth conjured up her best smile. You’re right. She placed her napkin next to her plate and nodded to their guests. Please excuse us for a moment.

The men rose from their chairs when Beth and Olivia did. The loss of Aidan’s touch impacted Beth more than she thought it would and she found herself wanting to return to him as soon as possible.

Olivia practically dragged her into the kitchen.

I’m so sorry, Beth, she said quietly. I should’ve spoken to you before I opened my big mouth about the hotel.

It’s all right. Beth wrung her hands. I’m just nervous about spending the night with Aidan.

You don’t have to have sex with him. There are other things you can do. Olivia’s eyes flashed wildly. I’ll give you some tips before we leave.

    Beth gulped.

Olivia frowned. If you want, I’ll tell Nathan he has to share a room with Aidan and I’ll stay with you.

No! Beth’s response was hastier than she intended. As much as she worried about spending the night with Aidan, there was no way she would pass up the opportunity.

Elizabeth Sutton, you vixen! I must say, I like this new side of you. Olivia winked. And I bet Aidan will, too.

While Olivia grabbed another bottle of wine, Beth took the apple pie out of the icebox and placed it on low heat in the oven to warm it up. She set the timer and they returned to the living room.

Aidan, Nathan, and Matthew stood upon their reentry. Aidan helped seat Beth. Nathan did the same for Olivia. During the remainder of the main course, Beth drank water only and Aidan did, too, while everyone else was conservative with their alcohol intake.

When the timer on the oven dinged twenty minutes later, Beth dropped her knife and fork. I’ll be right back.

The men didn’t even have time to stand before she was out of her chair and in the kitchen. She was excited for Aidan to taste her recipe, which she had amended to include what he’d told her he liked most about his mother’s pie.

She reentered the dining area with a large smile on her face. Aidan’s eyes widened when he saw what she brought with her.

Extra thick crust and a sprinkle of cinnamon, she said, directing her attention solely on him.

She set the pie down on the table and allowed Aidan to help her with her chair. He sat beside her and leaned in close.

Beth, this is… His eyes filled with wonder. Thank you.

She giggled. You haven’t even tasted it yet.

The smile he gave her was like a child’s on Christmas morning. I don’t have to. It’s perfect because you made it.

Beth ignored Connie’s eye roll in her periphery.

    Thank you, she replied softly.

The pie was finished quickly. Beth was appreciative of every compliment she received and noted with immense satisfaction that Aidan looked especially pleased after he finished his second piece.

Following dessert, Olivia suggested their guests move to the couches while she and Beth washed the dishes. Nathan, Connie, and Matthew took her up on her offer, but Aidan remained at the table. He tucked in his chair and reached for Beth’s plate as well as his own.

I’ll help you two clean up.

Beth met his dedicated gaze. I’ll take care of everything. You should relax.

With the way he stared back at her, it was as though he was reluctant to agree. Finally, his lips lifted into a small smile. Okay, if you’re certain.

Beth nodded and he joined their friends. She and Olivia cleared the table and cleaned the dishes quickly, choosing to leave the pots and pans for later.

Upon their return to the living room, they brought out ashtrays. Matthew, Connie, and Nathan lit up, but even after Beth’s encouragement, Aidan did not. In fact, he never smoked around her. She hoped he wasn’t refraining on account of her personal aversion to it.

During their post-meal conversation, Matthew invited them all to his New Year’s Eve concert at the Copa Room in the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Apparently, Frank Sinatra played there all the time and raved about it.

Even though Connie was already booked to go, she said she didn’t see the appeal of flocking to a desert town out of state when Palm Springs was as accessible and more developed. However, Matthew predicted good things for Las Vegas in the near future in terms of gambling and nightlife. Nathan, Aidan, Olivia, and Beth said the concert sounded like a fun way to ring in the New Year and agreed to check their schedules to see if the trip was plausible.

Does anyone want another drink? Beth asked during a lull in the conversation.

Actually, Connie and I should go. Matthew took Connie’s hand and they rose from the sofa. Connie has an early call at the studio and I tee off with Humphrey Bogart at six.

Beth and Olivia received compliments on their hostess and cooking abilities as they walked the couple to the door and retrieved the correct coats and Matthew’s hat from the closet. The group exchanged good-byes, and then Matthew tipped his fedora and escorted Connie out of the apartment.

Olivia closed the door behind them. I’m glad everything went well.

    So am I, Beth replied.

Nathan placed his hand on Olivia’s shoulder. I should get going, too.

    She pouted. Already?

His lips curved into a frown. Darling, you know I don’t want to, but I have an early start tomorrow as well. We’ll see each other again at lunch in the commissary.

    Olivia sighed. Oh, all right.

Beth retrieved Nathan’s fedora from the closet. Would his departure encourage Aidan to leave now, too? She hoped not.

Nathan put on his hat. As always, I had a wonderful time with all of you.

Thank you for coming. Beth gave him a hug.

Olivia removed her coat from the closet. I’m going to walk him to his car.

Nathan shook his head. Liv, that’s not necessary—

Olivia cleared her throat. Beth’s heart hammered as she realized her friend’s intention was to give her some alone time with Aidan.

Nathan looked sheepish as he appeared to clue in to the same thing. I mean, sure. That would be great.

Olivia winked at Beth on her way out of the apartment with her beau. Beth closed the door with a click that echoed through the apartment so loudly it was as if she had slammed it shut. She closed her eyes for a moment and released a slow breath before facing Aidan.

The beating of her heart kicked up as he drew her into his arms, eradicating her awkwardness and reigniting the warm, tingling sensations she felt earlier.

I’ve wanted to do this all evening, he murmured, drifting his hands up her back.

Me, too. Beth closed her eyes and let out a blissful sigh. Their recent separation made her forget how good she felt whenever they were alone together. There was no reason to feel nervous about spending the night with him in Santa Barbara. She trusted him to take care of her and believed he would never push her beyond her comfort zone.

Beth? His gentle voice pulled her from her thoughts.

She opened her eyes. Yes, Aidan?

    May I kiss you?

Beth’s nod was immediate. She could only hope she remembered how to do it properly and avoid disappointing him.

Aidan dipped his head, his stare ablaze with an attentiveness that made her feel beautiful, desirable… home. She closed her eyes, feeling his warm breath on her face and his arms tighten around her, bringing her trembling body flush to his.

In spite of their patient pace, Beth was completely unprepared for the surge of desire that took her captive when he brought their lips together. She whimpered into his mouth as he kissed her carefully, his hands placed respectfully on her hips, as if cemented there. The effect of their intimacy was so intense, and she was so far gone, she didn’t question it or care. Her only focus was reacquainting herself with his lips… his tongue.

The moan that rumbled in Aidan’s throat as she moved her hands to his hair and kissed him deeper erased her concern over whether she was serving him well. His reaction also gave her the courage to increase the urgency of her lips, hoping he would follow suit.

Abruptly, Aidan broke their kiss and brought his forehead to hers, his breathing heavier and faster than normal. His eyes were screwed shut and his face was coiled, as if stopping them had caused him physical pain.

I should go. His husky voice sounded reluctant. You have to get up early tomorrow.

Beth struggled to come up with something she could say to contest him.

Would you like a tour of the apartment? She blushed as the words left her mouth in an overzealous rush.

Aidan opened his eyes and brushed his hand to her face, regarding her with steady intensity that implied a famine completely unrelated to food. The pause that lingered between them made her worry he wasn’t interested in her offer . . . until he angled his head and closed the gap between their lips, gracing her with another sensual kiss that could only be interpreted as a resounding yes.

It took Beth a moment to regain her wits before she grasped his hand and brought him to the first stop on the tour, the kitchen, which didn’t take long to show him due to its tiny size. Next, they ventured across the living room and down the hallway to the bathroom.

Beth opened the door and gestured inside, thankful that the toilet seat was down and the shower curtain was drawn, even though she and Olivia always kept the apartment very clean.

This is our bathroom. She lowered her gaze bashfully. It’s small, but it serves its purpose.

Aidan nodded and surveyed the room from the doorway, his hand joined with hers in the space between them. As Beth watched him, she felt ridiculous for bringing him there. He was probably feigning interest solely for her benefit.

We didn’t have a chance to remodel it to our liking, she rambled through her nervousness. When we first moved in, we didn’t have much money, and then after we both signed at the studio, we were too busy. Now that we’re most likely moving soon, there’s no point.

That makes sense. Aidan flashed the disarming grin he seemed to reserve only for her and brought her hand to his lips for a kiss that wobbled her knees.

With a playful smile, Beth led him down the hallway to the adjacent door. This is Olivia’s room.

Aidan looked inside and grimaced at the colorful, overtly feminine décor.

Beth giggled as she pulled the door shut. I told Liv that if we moved, I needed to have some input into the decorating process as well, even though she’s the design expert.

    Aidan chuckled. "That’s probably
