- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I read this book so many years ago and yet I remember how much I loved my first Sidney Sheldon book! What I admired most about this great story teller is his detail in telling the story. He did so much research that it was a geography lesson and history woven through each book. This was a long book and it took place in a number of place like South Africa diamond mines and in New York. There was a great deal of injustice being done where generations of families where involved. Sidney Sheldon was so good at putting you in the place with the characters that I found myself not being able to put the book down.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Poor writing, silly plot.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5An excellent novel about several generations of the McGregor/Blackwell family who go from completely broke to unimaginably rich. The story begins with a glimpse of the present before stepping back into the past to Scotland in 1850 where Jamie McGregor leaves his family to seek a fortune in diamond prospecting in the Cape Colony (South Africa). He is soon cheated out of what he finds and begins a scheme of revenge which propels him to the top.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is the best book, i had ever read at the time. I liked reading, after this book. I was intimidated by the length, but it was so flawlessly written, the pace and excitement of the awesome adventure. All throughout the story, I never wanted to stop reading it. I loved it then and I love it now. I have given this book to everyone, I know who didn't like to read. This book has never failed me, with them. They are all avid readers now.
Thank you so much, Sidney Sheldon. You are the "Master Of The Game."

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I happened to chance upon this book discussion and couldn't resist sharing my own experience.I read this book quite a few years back,17 years to be precise, I was in my first year of graduation living in the college boys hostel. It was the time of the very first of our exams - the first semesters. Understandably, we are apprehensive and anxious. The exams stretched over a period of about 15 days. Everyday ( or rather night, since nothing could induce us to take up study books during the day!!!) after having cajoled myself that i have crammed everything seemingly important ( and that whats left is definitely not appearing the next day in the paper), I would take up this novel, switch off all the room lights, open the door and only switch on my bedside small lamp, and start reading for about half an hour or so before lights off!I don't exactly know what it was - the fact that it acted as a great stress buster or that the story itself was riveting or simply the reckless and foolhardy, and therefore immensely appealing, act of reading novel before exam night - but I thoroughly and vastly enjoyed reading this novel.I wouldn't say this is the best novel I have read, but certainly the most enjoyable one ever!!!!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Needless to say, everyone of Sheldon's stories are wonderful, they are dramatic, epic, sexy, and thrilling. This book is no exception, its an intricately woven tale about a corrupt family (corrupt as in completely messed up). Sometimes I randomly start thinking about this book and some of its intense and thrilling scenes, its a memorable book to say the least. Unfortunately, it did get boring at some parts of the book, but its a good read.
