    Chapter One

Chase Cody slammed his foot on the accelerator, his worn, black cowboy boot pressing the pedal all the way to the floor. The engine of the mid-seventies Mustang roared like a vicious beast at his call—the back tires scorching the pavement as the car lurched forward. Like a bullet, the Mustang peeled out of the alleyway and Chase pulled hard to the left. The backend fishtailed, and with expert precision, he compensated, easily straightening out the vehicle as he bulled down the crowded city street. The noon-hour sun blazed down across the heavy traffic patterns, yet pedestrians and cars alike were a blur to his vision, his icy blue eyes steeled forward and impervious to distraction. He did chance a quick glance in the rearview, recognizing two more muscle cars barreling down on him from behind.

At the next intersection, Chase turned right, the speed and velocity of the car causing the vehicle’s tail to drift left. Luckily, his skills were up to the task, and the Mustang quickly corrected itself and was speeding down the road again. Dodging in and out from between cars and trucks that were more like obstacles than traffickers, Chase bit down hard on the toothpick in his mouth, his teeth grinding.

The cars behind him were gaining.

No sooner had he put his focus back in front of him, when another car, a yellow Corvette pulled out onto the street ahead. From the passenger side of the Vette, a man in a leather jacket emerged from the window with a small, high powered firearm in his hand. Chase heard two rounds go off, and as he passed the mustard-colored sports car, smoke started to emerge from his engine. The plume entered the interior of the car, and he waved his hand in a futile effort to waft away the smoke. His throat starting to burn from the fumes, he leaned forward, narrowing his eyes, though he knew in his heart that he could never see through the cloud erupting from his engine.

Speeding along blindly, it was only a matter of time before Chase’s luck would run out. The front passenger fender and wheel clipped the edge of a conspicuously placed crate, and the Mustang started to roll. Spiraling, the car flipped, bouncing Chase as much as his safety restraint would allow. Along with each jolt, the car ricocheted off the pavement and then tumbled off into a shallow ravine. Broken glass struck Chase’s face and neck, and his ears started to ring from the screech and crunch of twisting metal. After the car finally came to a halt, the only thing he could hear was the faint sound of hissing and the steady drip of fluid that leaked somewhere from the engine block. Things were very still for what seemed like an eternity.

Cut! came the distorted call from a megaphone that seemed so far away. Chase shook his head and opened his jaw a few times,
