About this ebook
Now in his fifties, Richard Hannay is called upon to fulfill an old promise. Haraldsen, an acquaintance from Hannay’s days as a British spy, is dying, and demands that Hannay protect his son, Valdemar, who is about to inherit the secret to a great treasure. But enemies from Hannay’s past, including the infamous D'Ingraville, want in on the prize and will stop at nothing to get their hands on Valdemar. With the help of his old allies and teenage son, Peter John, can Hannay keep Valdemar, and the secret treasure, safe?
The Richard Hannay series, including The Thirty-Nine Steps, Mr. Standfast, The Three Hostages, and Greenmantle, established John Buchan as an original thriller writer and pioneer of espionage fiction. The Island of Sheep is the fifth and final book in the series.

Reviews for The Island Of Sheep
82 ratings5 reviews
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Written in 1936, this is the fifth and last novel of the "Richard Hannay" series. The books are as follows: The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915); Greenmantle (1916); Mr Standfast (1919); The Three Hostages (1924). If you are looking for PC novels, these will certainly not be your cup of tea, by the way. Buchan lived in a time when people luckily had never heard of PC!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another exciting adventure for Richard Hannay, this time with his 14-year-old son (as well as his old friend Sandy & others).
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Richard Hannay, famous hero of 39 Steps and Greenmnatle, has settled down as an English landowner with his wife and 14 year old son. But he is roused from his quiet life when his friend Lord Clayroyden shows him a piece of jade left by a Norwegian goldhunter named Hsroldsen, whom he had known in Africa. The jade is said to be the clue to a great treasure.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5No period charm, no plot, no suspense, no nothing. Just a potboiler written to make money at the end of his career.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I used to love the Richard Hannay books - still do for old times sake, but despite the well told tale, the wonderful moors and crags and bogs, the imperialist slides into stereotypes of class and gender and race. These days I enjoy the historically based scottish adventures better. Time to brush off Rider Haggard (twenty years older than Buchan) and see how he stands up to me getting older....
