Chapter 1

As the western sun peeked over the sandy landscape of Area 51, the huge base came to life. It had been guarded vigilantly during the night due to the contents of the base. This base was the number-one secret project of the United States and its allies.

Due to several conflicts in the past, Earth had become a target for alien forces. For this reason, John Koch had been chosen to head the United Program for Outer Space Protection. This program had been in effect for several years. The members of the crew had gone through numerous tests and surgeries the secret space department deemed necessary. Perhaps the most difficult part of being a UPOSP crewmember was the ban on reproduction. The crew was gone most of the time, though, so most didn’t think about it. They were lucky to be crewmembers for the SS-1, the agency’s premiere ship — many had applied, few were accepted.

The SS-1 was overhauled several times in the US and a few times in Valle of the parallel time universe. John Koch was in charge of picking the crew. His first pick was Tom Kincaid, an old friend. His second was Rolf Goering, director of Area 51. Last, but not least, was Naomi Nelson, navigator and love of John’s life. The rest of the crew included Dawn Johnson, weapons officer; Alice Brown, communication officer; Colonel Potter, Presidential aide; and Bonnie Rose, fighter pilot. This was the permanent crew of SS-1, with ancillary crewmembers added as needed. The ship was ready for the next trip when there was a danger to the Earth.
