About this ebook

I split him open from chest to head. As he is falling, one hand on the handle, and open palm on the hilt when I land, I shove the blade in the gut of the next one. A quick jerk to the side guts the demon. I spin around behind him where the next demon is waiting; swinging a clawed hand at me. I catch it’s wrist with my left hand and drive my blade into the spine of the one I just gutted.

    Chronicles - M.D.Linzenmeyer

    Return to Afghanistan

Two of the vehicles in our convoy are but smoldering wrecks. My guys are spread out, taking cover the best they can from the Afghan onslaught that befell us.

There must be almost a hundred of them and only twenty-seven of us. I rise quickly and fire off a barrage of rounds at a small outcrop of rock being used for cover by a few rag heads.

The soldier next to me stood to return fire and caught a bullet in his neck. He sprawled out next to me, holding his neck. I reached over my head and blind-fired four rounds then took off running for the next vehicle. RPG! someone behind me called out. I turn to see a trail smoke streaking across the sand toward a Hum-V, two vehicles back. Soldiers were running to take cover. One of them was shot in the leg while running and dropped to one knee. Just at that moment, the RPG struck him in his mid-section. His body mostly disintegrated, sending chunks in every direction. Three others around him were hit with splash damage and were killed.

Guys around me are dropping like flies. Then, as quickly as it started, there was armistice. The vehicles disappeared, the enemy vanished, and so did the guys that were still alive. All that remains is the sand and my dead brothers in it. One by one, they all got up and retrieved their weapons. They all turned to face me then raised their rifles and started firing at me. Everything went dark.

    Train Station

All I see around me is darkness. I see nothing, I hear nothing. I don't even feel air around me. I walk in a straight line with my hands out, slowly, hoping to find a wall or trip over something. As I'm walking I realize it is getting lighter and I am able to make out shapes. They are fuzzy at first, no real shape or definition. Then I realize, I’m walking through a field, following some train tracks. There is a long train that is stopped on them and I can see into each car as I pass by them. The train starts to move and I debate if I should hop on and ride it a little ways, give myself a break from walking for a bit. I run up to the train and jump on.

I climb the ladder on the back of the car and when I get on top of it, I jog from one car to the next, jumping the gap between cars, making my way to the front. When the engine comes into view, I stop and climb back down and wait for an opportune time to jump off.

I see a bridge coming up that crosses over the tracks. I jump off and walk up the hill to the bridge. I look both ways and don’t see anything. I head to the right. After a while of walking, I see a train station. I wait for the next train to arrive and get on it.

The train is open on all sides, much like an old trolley. I walk down the aisle and sit on the first open bench I see. At the next stop, a girl gets on and sits down next to me. She is really good looking, bright green eyes and a white sun dress. She sits down next to me and just smiles at me. I smile back, uncertain of what I should say, but it seems she knows me or is at least expecting me to say something.

She stops smiling and turns to look toward the front of the train. Three guards are coming toward the car I’m in, I can’t tell, but they are either looking at her or me. Something tells me, it’s me they are coming for. I stand up, they stop, and she looks up at me.

You should probably run. She says.

I turn and run toward the back of the train. I am jumping over people's crap in the isle and pushing past some that are standing in the middle of it. I can see the last car. Only two more to go. I look over my shoulder and see the guards gaining on me. I push my way to the nearest window and climb out and up on top of the train and sprint to the last car.

When I reach the back, I slide over the side and hang off the side of the train with my feet planted on the edge of a window. Looking ahead and past the front of the train, I see a bridge coming. The guards are still coming, and behind them, standing on a bench, I see the girl I just met, watching me. When the guards reach the car I’m in, they slow to a walk. I keep my eyes on
