About this ebook

Fresh from the trenches of World War I, Paul Monroe returns home to a life he hardly recognizes. His body is broken, his prospects have faded, and his sweetheart is married to someone else. Another man might surrender under such blows, but his stint in France has made Paul a soldier. He knows that some things are worth fighting for--and some enemies must be killed to be conquered. The only question now is how he should do it.

They ought to be ashamed, every damn one of them. Meanwhile, all her momma can say is what a good match she made because he’s got money—

Enough! Paul's voice had an edge so sharp it cut through even his father's tirade. He held up one shaking hand (his other was gripping the knob of his cane so tightly that the knuckles showed white) and said again, That's enough. I don’t need to hear any more.

I'd say you don't, Amos agreed grimly. Pretty homecoming for a hero, hearing something like that the minute you set foot off the train.

Paul looked down at his boots. For a moment, he did not speak. Then, he said haltingly, I did wonder…when her letters stopped coming, I wondered if she might have….But I thought…

How could you know? Amos reached out and took his son's narrow shoulder in a grip so tight that it almost hurt, but his tone was kind when he added, "Out there in France, in that hospital. How could you
