About this ebook

Benjamin has dreamed all of his life of flying, but not in an airplane. He really wants a set of wings, beautiful and widespread, to soar with his friends, the birds, through the skies. This is the latest novella from Winslow Swan, the creator of The Convincer.

Born and raised in Atlanta, Ga, I grew up surrounded by mystery and suspense, in book form. I also grew up listening not only to the great old radio horror shows but also heard the original run of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater. I contribute them for my imagination of horror and suspense. My favorite authors at the time were of course Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Edgar Allen Poe. I now live in the North Georgia mountains where I am currently producing (with my best friend Crimson McKenzie) writing, directing, and appearing in a full cast audio series of horror, mystery, and suspense (with a few laughs along the way) titled "Doorway To Nightmare" on YouTube. (Check the channel out. 43 episodes with many more to come) Writing can, at times, become arduous and trying to find the quiet time to actually get my thoughts and stories down can sometimes be quite straining. However, I continue to do what I can to trouble the dreams of the reader.I find myself to be one of the few who have fulfilled all of their dreams. I have worked in both radio and television, as an actor and a writer, and have also appeared on stage. I have made two films (which shall both never see the light of day) and am now concentrating on a writing as a career.

    1.

Ben had always loved to watch the winged creatures that dotted the sky. In his youth, he would sit for hours on a clear summer day, watching the birds fly around on the myriad journeys across the sky. He saw the large eagles make their way to points unknown, imagining himself flying with them.

What it must be like to feel the cool air blowing across your face, looking down upon the ant-like creatures known as humans. He often found himself standing on the end of the old wooden bridge that crossed the river near his home, his arms outstretched, wondering what would happen if he jumped and found that he could fly like his friends in the sky.

He never did take that sudden leap of faith, for he knew what gravity would do to his small, frail body.

It’s time to come in, Benjamin, he would hear his mother call out to him.

With great reluctance, he would make his way inside to his bedroom, where, after being tucked in amidst the many blankets, his mother would begin the daily routine of medications. He wondered what would happen to him if he told his mother that he would no longer take them.

C’mon, Benji, open wide, she would coax him, and like the obedient child of ten that he was, he would do so.

From his earliest memories, he knew of hospitals and emergency rooms, doctors that could only talk to his mother, nurses that smiled falsely, orderlies that would spout out jokes that meant nothing to him, all in the name of keeping him alive.

There were still the birds, fluttering around the sky, landing on the windowsill, as if to beg Ben to join them in their daily flights.

The doctor’s say that this should help with the pain, his mother would say.

Yes, there was the pain. The stinging pain that would sometimes be so intense, that he could not even bear to open his eyes. These were the hardest times, when he could not look out the window to see what his friends were up to.

One more pill to go, son.

    His
